This is a mystery, but the theory is that the ship that the Nostromo crew found in the first film was that of an alien race that came across an egg and brought it aboard. Note that there is only one crewmember on board, so he probably found the egg on another world, it hatched, and layed a queen embryo inside of him. The ship crashed, but the queen mamaged to lay lots of eggs before wandering out of the ship and eventually starving to death.
