iPOD uncertainty

Sounds too good to be true. Your entire CD collection at your fingertips.. hmmm

Anyone out there have one of these? Any flaws or drawbacks. How durable are they?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas xmas

Hey, my friend just bought one and it is AWESOME.

In addition to making playlists and organizing all the music the accessories are really cool. For example the "itrip" is a thing that plugs into the top and plays through your car radio.

I'm just a cheap bastard and give up the 3 bills.

I hear ya rd. This was another concern as it's about half the size of a CD jewel case. Imagine taking the time to import 7,500 songs and then just losing it. omfg

My wife recently bought herself an iPod.

It's a limited edition version she tells me.

She thinks it great. She uses it all the time.

Is that why she calls out your name when she's using it?

I think this version is called an iWater.

I wouldn't get one.

Phillips do a range called Expanium, which are CD-based mp3 players.

The drawbacks of an iPod are...

01) iPods use AAC encoding - not mp3. AAC is part of the mp4 protocol - you can't just import your existing mp3s straight onto it;

02) iPods aren't backwards compatible. You can't link an iPod to a PC (including your own) and copy music from it;

03) If you lose an iPod, you lose whatever's on it;

04) If you go to a party, its less fuss to take an mp3 CD out of your portable player and pop it into somebody's DVD player. Wiring up an iPod to a friend's stereo system could get messy;

05) Disc-based players also play regular CDs.

I think the only advantage of a hard-drive player like an iPod, is that the batteries last longer (as there's no moveable parts). Other than that, they're a bit useless.

Yeah, but do mp3 CD players still leave that 2 second gap between selections?

I didn't know that when I bought mine and I find it so annoying that I hardly listen to it.

Even when you copy a CD without silences in beetween tracks(linked tracks). I can't stand it mad

Actually, iPod's battery is crap when you compare it to other mp3 players. iRiver's new 20GB player has a 16 hour battery before you need to recharge. The Zen Xtra a couple of hours less, plus it's removeable and you can replace it yourself.

I don´t know much about technical stuff, but I do know that I can import my mp3s straight onto my iPod. Every single song I have on it is mp3 as far as I know.

If there´s some sort of hidden format conversion thing going on when I do the importing, then it´s no problem anyway. The whole thing takes about 1-2 seconds per song...

Useless? Now you´re just being ridiculous. I use my iPod every day and have no complaints whatsoever. It´s a fantastic invention and great value for money.

What's that story about batteries lasting 18 months and no replacement available?
