CPU probs! Can I get a hand?

Hi everyone.

Goodnews, I've purchased my domain name and web-space and my site should be active in time for the new year.

Badnews, my CPU is screwed. Whenever I'm in Internet explorer and I'm typing if I hit enter my typing curser disapears. Acording to the scans I've run I have no viruses or spy wear present. Can anyone help question PLEASE...

If you're computer is runnin slow, there's a few things you can do to help speed it up...

1.) Disable any programs running in the background that you dont need.

From your Start Menu, choose "Run" and type "msconfig" and hit "Enter". From the "General" tab choose "Selective Startup".

Then click the "Startup" tab and you will see a list of all the programs that load up and run in the background each time you reboot your computer. Go down this list and remove check marks from any programs you do not need running, such as Real Player, Quicktime, AOL, etc...

If you are unsure what a particular program is, take a glance at the path to it, which may give you a clue as to what it is. Or just look it up on Google. For example, if you see an item called "ccApp", do a search for that term on Google and more than likely you will find a page explaining what it is.

When you're all done, hit "apply" and reboot. After your computer reboots, you will see a message that you have used the System Configuration Utility, just put a check in the lower left corner, and hit "Ok"

2.) Clean up your temporary files, and your registry

http://www.jv16.org/ <--This site has a good registry cleaner. You can probbably find a freeware one as well on download.com or snapfiles.com. Be sure to follow the directions carefully.

http://www.webroot.com/ <--This company makes a great program called "Window Washer" that will clean alot of junk files on your computer.

3.) Get rid of spyware

http://www.webroot.com/ <--They also make another really good program called SpySweeper that will clean all the spyware off your computer, and can even block future crap like that from even being installed.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ <--They offer a freeware version of AdAware, which is similar to SpySweeper but not as many features.

4.) Always keep your AV up to date and periodically do a full scan of your hard drive

This is a no brainer, but I know alot of people who never update their virus definitions, or scan their computer. They just install something like Norton, and let it sit there, never using it.

5.) Run Windows Update

Another no brainer, but for some reason, I see alot of people who never do this.

6.) Defrag your hard drive

If you're running Norton Systemworks, you can use Speeddisk, otherwise just use Windows own defrag utility. Its at Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

7.) Turn off WindowsXP features that you don't need.

Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties" and choose "Advanced". Under "Performance" click "Settings". Go to "Visual Effects" and choose "Adjust for Best Performance". You can then go back and check a few things that you do still want to keep.

Go back to the "System Properties" window and choose the "System Restore" tab. If you never use this feature, you might as well turn it off. It wastes hard drive space, and it doesn't work that well anyhow.
