I Just Saw the Best Movie of the Year

Return of the King.

I have no hesitation in giving it 5 stars.

It totally did justice to the book; Peter Jackson and his crew = genius.

I have never seen better special effects EVER in a movie. That this movie totally wipes the floor with any Matrix movie is a massive understatement. The material on which the Matrix was based was weak, the Lord of the Rings is rich with emotion, grit and myth and is a millions times more solid as a whole. All three Rings films are great but the final is just mind-blowing.

Anyway, that's what I think. What did/do you think about it?

If anyone's wondering, my second, almost equal favourite of the year was a totally different film - Lost in Translation, which I give 4 1/2 stars.

I completely agree. What makes it special, and the whold trilogy special, is that Peter Jackson didn't lose the soul amongst the effects. ROTK was a wonderful end.

this was the best movie of the year, IMO...a fantastic end to the most wonderful trilogy I have ever seen. I finally saw it last Tuesday and plan to see it again this coming weekend.

woot! RETURN OF THE KING woot!

I HOPE peter decides to make a live action Hobbit to go along with the other three. I think that is my only external wish for the new year.

co-sign

I kept thinking about that as I left ROTK. I was so sad that "it was over" and my hope for a "Hobbit" movie kept me from being too sad...

I haven't seen ROTK yet I am going to take my mom on Sunday. But I can't even tell you how much I am anticipating the movie. I think I might be resisting because I hate when things I love end! But I am going.

Apparently Peter Jackson has said in regard to a Hobbit movie that he is just "waiting for the call" and that he'd love to do one.

I liked it alot...but I'm partial to "Two Towers" myself.

Still, I tip my hat to Petey...he did a good job.

Despite the fact that he cut Christopher Lee out of the film for some reason..

I hear my new celebrtiy crush Billy Boyd has a singing scene ("I fear not the shadows of men"), and does wonderfully!

I just checked out the first two films on DVD for the first time to set myself up for the third. Hopefully, I can see ROTK in the coming week.

That'd be interesting. I haven' heard anything about this, but I have read that Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan (Pippin and Merry) are currently working on a comedy screenplay. Apparently, there's a lot of demand to see these two team up again for other projects.

yes i saw it last night as well. i thought it was great but i will have to watch it a second time to really get a grip on it.
BUT!
yes for the entire duration of the film i didn't see one thing that made me think there was animation - that's how good the animation is.
forget the awful animation of Star Wars and The Matrix - Lord of the Rings is the real deal.

Is it just me or is there an overtly sexual sub-text?

I mean, look at the facts:

  • Everybody is chasing after Frodo's ring.
  • There's a huge tower with an eye on the end. omg
  • Mount Doom is obviously a vagina.
  • It has dwarves and midgets(hobbits). Enough said.
  • Almost everyone has a beard.
  • Shelob is a female spider that sucks her prey.

It's disgusting! disbelief

Don't forget the homosexual subtext between Sam and Frodo.

As for the whole Hobbit adaptation: don't couont on it for a while.

Peter Jackson says he wants to do it, and of course the execs at New Line are drooling at the prospect of making even more money off this franchize, but there is one major setback: the rights are mired in a legal bog that may take years to sort out. New Line owns the rights to make a live-action film of The Hobbit, but another studio owns the rights to DISTRIBUTE it. On top of it all, another company owns all the merchandising rights to the book. All in all, the legal folks at New Line will have to hammer out a deal to make this work, and that could take years (a similar thing happened with Spider-Man, and it took ten years for it all to be sorted out).
