I liked the first Matrix.
The second one I thought was a bit pants, but maybe it could be redeemed as an essential part of the trilogy. Then, the third one was so bad I even hate the first movie now.

Utter crap. Best movie of 2003 is City Of God. I will take your word for City of God. We just see those 2 other movies differently. I think you're being too hard on them. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

The first Matrix was hugely overrated, and the follow-ups were just plain silly. BEWARE: lots of spoilers in my ROTK rant. Highlight the text to read them... Rant starts here...I love the first two LOTR movies (well, the second one I love the extended DVD version, the movie theatre version was an uneven edit). But in the third one PJ finally couldn't cover up Tolkien's crap writing. And thus we now get a repeat of the Helms Deep battle (except it's during the day and it's bigger), a complete lack of tension (I thought knowing that Gandalf was gonna return just in time to save Helms Deep was stupid, but the whole deal with the ghost army was downright pathetic and a clear indication that by that time in the book Tolkien suddenly figured out that he heeded a deus ex machina to help the "good guys"). There were way too many climaxes. The movie was also hugely uneven, with the silly spider business vs the huge war. Plenty of stuff doesn't make much sense (why are the elves leaving middle earth, for instance, and where are they going) unless you actually read some of the back story. The Witch King says he's gonna break Gandalf, yet the two never battle each other, and instead he gets killed in a rather pathetic way by Eowyn. The whole deal with that black crystal ball is simply ridiculous. And why does everythign have to have half a dozen names? Suddenly Gandalf has become the "White Rider", and even more annoying "Mithrandir". The book that Bilbo and Frodo have written in HUGE letters is so thin that it simply doesn't make sense. Frodo is supposed to be deeply affected by the whole ordeal and that's why he leaves with the elves, but he barely looks ill. I don't blame PJ for all this (although I suspect that they simply ran out of time on some parts of the movie -- I wouldn't be surprised if the extended dvd cut is a whole lot more satisfying), since most of it looks amazing on screen. But what gets in the way is that Tolkien simply isn't a good writer (which is already evident in the far too lengthy opening bit of the first movie about the life of the Hobbits, who are BORING). The real problem is that there's barely any tension, and some of the things that happen simply don't make sense. The people of Rohan go to Helms Deep to fight, barely make it out alive, yet here they're a mighty army again and help turn the battle??? Same for the Gondor warriors, who mostly get slain at Minas Tirith yet the next thing they're at the black gates. In TTT Frodo & co encounter several of the hired armies, yet you barely see them in movie three. What are the elephaunts doing at the attack on Minas Tirith (or are we to believe Sauron expected the people of Rohan to help fight -- and if so why are the orcs so surprised when they turn up)? Why is the "elephant man" leading the army of the orcs, and why does he need to tell them anything? This is supposed to be an army of tens of thousands, yet there's ONE guy commanding it all even to a level of telling them when to shoot their arrows? This movie's got almost as many holes as Attack Of The Clones, but it is saved by the talents of Peter Jackson. (Whereas Lucas has apparently forgotten everything about movie making.) I'd still recommend it to be seen in a movie theatre (but only if you've seen the extended versions of the first two first), because some of the scenes do look amazing. 4/5 for the way it looks, 1/5 for the actual story.... end of rant. Kill Bill Volume I had some good parts, but it was waaay too long and often way to silly, and to split the movie in two was simply greedy. I wouldn't be suprised if the two volumes combined and edited properly would make a decent (but not great) movie, with an extended DVD cut for those that can't get enough. And I simply can't love the movie: there's nothign there to love. Whereas City Of God broke my heart, amazed me, shocked me, rattled me, unsettled me. I heard thirteen was good from a few people. Might have to wait until video but it is one i will watch. "Thirteen" was one of the most honest--and nihilistic--movies about the teenage experience. It's up there with "Welcome to the Dollhouse" for brutal honesty.

Matrix revelations
ok it wasnt that great but its the end of a cool trilogy, Lord of thr rings:ROTK i watched it the day it came out and plan to go see it again pretty soon. its great, the war scenes are amazing again. ppl been moaning about it already but i think it was really good, the only bad thing was that everyone kinda forgot about Sauraman. some people already say they dont like it and its not easy to follow. i found it really easy to follow and fill out all the bits peter j had to leave out cos ive read the book quite a few times. Tolkiens crappy writing !?! oh my, i read the hobbit at school and was hooked, city of god i dont know which year this was released but i only watched this year. a review said it was like the 'brazilian goodfellas', with goodfellas being one of my all time favuorite movies i thought id try it, well that claim weas kinda over ambitious but the movie is great. i admitt that i havent watched that many movies as i had exams so i havent really had time

BEWARE: lots of spoilers in my ROTK rant. Highlight the text to read them... Very good analysis. Nevertheless, I felt it was a deeply affecting fantastical movie, and yeah, everyone knows what's gonna happen in the end, and I had some of the same questions you did, but it was amazingly shot and well-executed by the actors. As for the Matrix, I felt that the 2d and 3d movies delved deeper into the characters, despite its drawbacks (the first Zion sequence in Reloaded was way too long). I think the franchise's reputation will be redeemed immensely over the years. And I think most people are plain spoiled. The Matrix is one of the best action franchises of the last 20 years. I think City of God could be considered a superior movie (sight unseen) simply because it's steeped in reality. The players were the kids who lived it.
