I am usually the most creative when i am with children!

Inspiration strikes me just before I fall asleep. But then it's usually too late to reap.

ben franklin used to try to fall asleep in a chair with a rock in his hand and a metal bucket by his side. when he started to doze off, the rock fell out of his hand, hit the bucket, woke him up. apparently he got some of his best ideas that way.
i think just before we fall asleep is one of our best creative times. also being with children, when really sleepy, when having sex, all those previously mentioned times.

During the spring I took this creative process class that was FUN! We'd get assignment's like "Design your way out of a paper bag" or "Your back is your front" and give our interpretations of these abstract ideas. Whenever I came up with a thought I would always jot it down. Robin Landa's "Thinking Creatively" is full of great ideas and solutions.

Sometimes a photo might inspire me to do something silly. This would happen a lot with baseball pix. Like I saw a picture of Mo Vaughn giving his teammate a high-five and decided to turn him into the new Bo Jackson.

I like "The Playful Eye" because it's full of fun optical illusions and things that trick the eye. It's fun to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Generally in the middle of the night by myself.

That's the time when there's the least amount of influence and distraction.

I know, pref at an hour when you know that 98% of all the
people in a 25 mile radius are asleep.

That's when I feel most creative and productive. I could
refurbish the house, do yoga, take the dog on a 5 mile
walk, do the dishes, write some poetry and a short story
drink a gallon of coffee, re-arrange my books by author
or alphabet or by theme, surf the internet and look for
weird stuff, write some more, listen to some music, open
up the windows and drink some more coffee whilst the dog
sleeps in my bed grrr

Think about stuff that drives me nuts, go and read to try
and forget it again, make some food, write some stuff in
a notebook for later use, finally stroll to my bedroom,
lift the dog out of bed, put him in his own basket and go
to sleep.

Then, in the morning I feel like shit and just go through
the motions all day long. Finally, when I start to feel
alive again at about 00:30 AM, I read the stuff I wrote a
few nights ago and am in awe of my own genius.

Best of all, there's no one awake to contradict it lol

That sounds about right.

Creativity is like sex for me.

I'll take it pretty much anytime, unless I'm really tired or irritated by life's difficulties. However, I will give either a shot in vain to forget the problem, but the problem usually affects the performance.

I thoroughly enjoy both with ecstatic joy, but if I have tooo much of either I get worn out. The only difference being if I have too much creativity I can't sleep because my mind is buzzing and if I have too much mind-blowing sex I sleep like a baby.

I find that if my sexual energy builds up I can be really creative until I release the energy, then I'm kinda neutral again. I don't think a specific time of day or month or year is anymore creative for me. I do like the winter months more. The heat of the summer wears me out and I can't do much of anthing, much less be creative.

Initial inspiration usually comes from being upset or just inspired by whats going on around me. I'd say 80% from upset moments. For my music, I then go back to those ideas and add parts and expand on them. So it's more technical, but it's kinda like vibing off someone else's music and collaborating. Following the sex analogy, this then becomes masturbation.

lol

When do you have the best thoughts or ideas come to you? Is it doing a certain activity that brings it out of you, or do you just have to be 'someplace' mentally (or physically) to bring it out in you. Or does it just hit you at random with no apparent rules?

Do you ignore it or write it down or record it in some way? Do you see these thoughts and ideas as valuable or worthless, unable to be used/exploited/understood by anyone but you - or possibly not even you?

as far as time of day then when i'm not bound to the time constraints of the work week. like, late at night on weekends. i usually get most of my work done at home because i'm comfortable there, and have most of what i need.

i have ideas all the time and carry a notebook to write my ideas down. i also jot notes to myself when i'm working.

most of my ideas are logical extensions of former ideas. but sometimes i get an idea from nowhere, like a shaft of insight from beyond me. muses whispering in my ear? i dunno. i thank them anyway
