Gay oral speech Have you ever been outed as gay from your voice alone?
What is it? Maybe it's a campy lisp... a certain pitch, or fabulous vowel sounds? For the people who have known me for years, it doesn't seem to set off their gaydars.. but I met new people in college and they made immediate judgements. One friend said she knew from the first time she heard me speak that I was gay because she recognized a similar "sing-songy" voice similar to a different gay male friend of hers. Another college friend said he guessed I was gay for the same reason. "I don't know if your voice has always been that way, but you definitely have gay voice." I have heard my voice recorded on tape and playback for demo recordings (as far back as grade 6) and I am always surprised at the sound of my own "gay voice" because I don't sound that way in my head/ears and it's nothing I try to "put on" either. What's with that?

true story...
I dreamt of my 2nd g/f when I was 12...I didn't actually meet her until I was 15. We dated for 5 years (on & off) until she finally decided that she needed to move on and experience more out of life. Which was fine with me, cuz I wanted the same. However, something happened to her that I knew all along. She was gay. She didn't discover that until she had lived her life the way she wanted to. It took years for her to tell me...but, when she finally did, all I could tell her was that I already knew. She asked how I knew and I couldn't answer that...I just knew...that's all. To this day, I still can't explain how I know. Granted, I have many gay friends and family members...but, I don't think that they've had anymore of an influence over me than to keep an open mind. So, I don't know...I guess there's just some people that just plain give off a "gay aura" (if you will) and everyone can pick up on it. I realize that this wasn't of any help...but, well, it's just one of my many sorted life experiences...

I was at a straight bar with a few friends of mine. A lady sat next to me at the bar and we started up in a little small talk. We were both completely toasted (we were at an afterhours bar). Out of the blue, mid conversation, she just says "you're gay, arent you?". And it totally freaked me out.
Almost everyone I've come out to had no clue. So this totally caught me off guard.

People can tell from my voice too. I don't have a lisp and don't use camp-speak, I just don't have a super masculine voice. My voice is somewhere inbetween. I sound exactly like my mom on the phone. People are always getting us confused. Not sure if that means my mom has a manly voice or I have a womanly voice.
Anyone out there who has heard me speak...what do you think? Do I have a gay voice? 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Anyone out there who has heard me speak...what do you think? Do I have a gay voice? Yeah, you do. But you're right -- it's not lispy, campy, or high. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista
