The Nastiest House You've Ever Been (Lived?) In

Tonight at my last appointment, I had a home visit with a client, the client's 5 month old infant, 3 yr old son, and a medical interpeter. I've been to this apartment before, and it's always bad (landlord has complained to her and she was almost kicked out for leaving her garbage bags outside her door and attracting rats), but tonight was the worst.

Fruitfly looking things flying around in the air, biting me and the interpreter...

Food on the table, floor, etc.

The stench of garbage/dirty diapers feeling ill

Mom gave her 3 yr old kid (whose teeth are beginning to rot) 2 popsicles while I was there, and he was finishing one up as I got there. He also would not keep his diaper on, kept taking it off, and I heard the toilet flushing--I wonder if he flushed the diaper? eek

I still feel itchy!!

What's the worst place you've been in? Was it someone else's house, or someplace you and roommates lived while in college and you didn't care how it looked?

Give us some gross out stories!!

Me, too--seriously! I wonder if I should be more careful of what I wear and disinfecting myself. hmmm There ARE some health concerns whenever you go into another person's house!

Althom, what's the grossest place you've been/lived in?

I've never lived in a gross place. I'm a very tidy person and I've always roomed with girls...so they always made sure I picked up after myself. lol
Actually they were the ones who taught me how to cook and clean for myself.

Are you sure they didn't just do it FOR you, the way most women do when the guy doesn't clean properly? wink

Well...I did have these mates who lived in a house near a railway track. 3 guys, so you can imagine there was no cleaning going on. ill
For artwork they had stacked their beer cans in the livingroom and actually made a castle out of it. beer

My student flat in the final year. It was revolting at the best of times. 1 day I got so sick of all the washing up left around that I did it all and it took me an hour. Although there was this stinky guy I lived with whose surname was Blood(!) who had this stinky pan. It made me wretch so I couldnt wash it.

It was just horrible, little blow flys used to be attracted to our kitchen light and in the morning there would be 100s of dead 1's collected on the table.

I could go on ill..

Gross...I can imagine! I lived in a couple of "partyhouses" like that in my early 20s, where groups of my friends kinda rotated in and out of different houses. A few times, I rotated in after a couple of very dirty people had fucked everything up. After awhile, you get tired of being the only one doing anything--so either you keep doing all of the cleaning, but end up resenting the hell out of them; or you give up and stop doing anything and join em living in filth; or you leave. shrug

Yeah, Ive often had that feelin! In my 1st year me and a couple of friends who are still close had a huge water fight and the place got soaked. It smelled so damp in the morning. Luckily it was the morning of the day I was going home for the summer!

OMG, I just remembered one of the houses I moved into, where some of my friends were already living. They'd been letting a bunch of Hare Krishnas come over and cook and eat and dance and sing there (I think my friends were broke, and the Krishnas brought free food, and it was interesting, so...lol). Anyway, when I moved in, the City had issued a notice saying that all of the trashbags of Krishna party food, waste, etc. in the backyard had to be dumped or else we'd be fined this HUGE amount (there were at least 50-plus bags in the backyard!). To make a long story short, there were MAGGOTS all over those g-damned trashbags, and I refused to deal with them since I hadn't even lived there when all of that was going down. But I saw those maggots, hordes of them, and until you've seen something like that, you'll just never know what "disgusting" is... feeling ill

What? You mean, letting the Krishnas come over? biggrin The people I hung out with were very interested in anyone different than they were. I think it appeared to them to be a peace-loving, interesting, philosophical, non-threatening type of religion and--the food was FREE! wink

The nastiest house I've ever been in was this guy I knew when I was younger. I use to take guitar lessons from him, he was an incredible guitar player! But the house he lived in! disbelief

The had animals and I swear when you looked at their carpet it had so much dog & cat hair on it, you would've thought it snowed in their house. The sink was piled with dishes, actually there were unwashed dishes all through the house, but the kitchen was the worse. Dishes stacked on dishes in the sink, table and stove, garbage everywhere, I was scared to sit down over by his house & I always made sure I brought something to drink over there so he wouldn't offer. The place reeked of animal feces.

I know you might ask why did I go over there, but my only answer is, this kid was amazing on the guitar! His brother was also a badass drummer, but hygenically they didn't have a clue!

Part of the reason was his father was disabled & his mom was nuts They use to stuff envelopes for income. This kid also had some serious self esteem issues an problems with people of color. I convinced him to stay over my house one night and figured we could jam out and record some stuff and this dude stayed up all night cause he was afraid my brother was gonna beat him up in his sleep and take his guitar. lol

anyways, yeah it was a dump!

Being poor doesn't mean a person has to live in filth--that's definitely something I've learned being a social worker. I have tons of clients, and many many of them keep a very tidy home, even if there isn't the nicest furniture, or it's cold.

I'm very sorry about that experience--learning someone you admired/liked was brought up to fear people like you/your brother. sad You shoulda told him, next time you went over to his house, that you were brought up to be afraid of nuts people like his mama! wink

I know first hand that being poor doesn't mean you have to live in filth. being the son of a single mom with 2 other brothers and being raised in the ghetto was not an excuse not to be clean, my mom made sure we had some home training. Shit she had us vacuuming, washing dishes, clothes, ironing, scrubbing down the bathroom by the age of 6 lol and if the chores weren't done watch out! eek whip

To this day I'm a clean freak, I'm constantly yelling at my girlfriend for being messy (she grew up with servants rolleyes mad )

I heard about him being scared of my brother second hand disbelief and was terribly disappointed. after I found out about some of his views our relationship slowly disenagrated.

i have a "crazy cat lady" on my petsitting route. the client sheet says she has 8 cats in this small house, but i can't tell how many there are for sure. every last surface in the house is piled high with stuff... magazines, books, paperwork... just incredible amounts of stuff. there are litterboxes all around the house, and the cats have torn up most of the furniture.

interestingly enough, she's a therapist...

i've gotten kinda used to it - it doesn't bother me at all anymore, and she always leaves a nice tip! some of the other petsitters don't like to go there, but i couldn't care less. she's not endangering the health and well-being of any children, so as far as i'm concerned, she can live however she wants to.

UGH !!! These stories! :O !!!

Last Hallowe'en, I was in New Orleans and Baton Rouge for a week visiting family.

My roommate, Sherryse, had the place to herself. I had always cleaned up after us, and didn't really think much about it, because I was so used to it. I sure realized what a difference it made. One week I am gone, and I walk into the flat and there are dirty dishes everywhere, the catbox had not been cleaned (:ILL:), there was a chunk of hair in the fucking shower drain (:PUKE:), beer and liquor bottles everywhere (parties), soda spilled all over my new couch, dirt all over our carpet.

When she and me became friends in high school, I'll never forget the first time I went over to her house. Jesus H. Christ. Thank god Ree wasn't this bad. Her mother, bless her, is a lovely lady but is a hermit and never goes outside. She also never pulls the drapes or lets any fresh air in. It fucking got on my nerves. She must have had every TV Guide that was released in my lifetime, stacked everywhere. There were a ton of 2-Liter soda bottles everywhere. Dishes. The cats went to the bathroom in the fucking HALL. There was no cold water, only hot. There was a huge pile of dirty clothes and linens in the bathroom- I kid you not, her mom just moved a few months ago and the SAME PILE, exactly the same stuff was piled there still when I went to help her pack up.

I can't imagine living like that. There was shit everywhere. They had lived there for almost ten years and there were boxes everywhere that still weren't unpacked. And she didn't throw anything away. She was on welfare and they hardly ate. I won't even tell you what she made the kids eat when they did have food. The kitchen was just more piles of shit. On the stove, there was a large cookie sheet with about 500 layers of aluminum foil. They wouldn't wash the shit, they'd just add another layer on top of the old one and bake! barf I cannot describe the stench in that place.

My friend was mentally ill. when it got really bad she would just pile up the dishes and go out and buy more. same thing for clothes for her and her son. thank god they only had a guniea pig. her son had a tent set up in the living room this was his safe spot from all the junk, food and glass ( when she got mad she would just clear the counters by swiping everything on the floor) the water got turned off and they peed in cups and went across the street to dump. occassionally they would come over to my place and shower. after 5 months she attempted suicide and was put in a mental ward for 3 days, her son went to his dad and the county sent someone in and we all ( me, her and the county worker) cleaned the apartment. it took about 3 days. she eventually lost custody of her son and then I moved away. he is 22 now and she is still the same...she's manic depressive. we don't talk any more.

the worst place though was this guy and his wife and baby when we were in Germany ( they were americans) , when I would have to go to talk to them they would always come out into the hallway to talk. they had a van with so much junk in it the pile of garbage was even with the part of the back seat you sat on. when they picked us up from the airport the baby's car seat was soo nasty that I put 3 blankets down before I put my baby in the seat and then told my oldest to hold her hands so she wouldn't touch anything.

they had 2 dogs and 3 cats...when they finally got kicked out my husband and others that he worked with had to go and clean the place. there was dog and cat feces all over the place, the baby had been just crawling around so there was human feces on the floor too...when they left they left 3 piles of clothes in 2 of the bedrooms and at the bottom of the piles were summer clothes and they left in february..there was blood soaked underwear and dirty nasty diapers that had started to disentegrate. they ended up just pulling up the carpets and calling the animal control and condeminng the quarters. my husband said he and the guys were vomiting from the smell.

Before I started working in journalism, I mentored at-risk youth for a local social service facility. My job entailed making home visits and taking these kids out on the town to expose them to new things.

Some of the homes I visited were so disgusting I swear it took all the nerve I had just to enter. One client lived with an elderly grandmother, and their house smelled of an unknown funk... I can only characterize it as the same stink one's filthy laundry would have after several months without washing. All the walls were stained as if they were washed with grease and dirt. There was food, paper, clothes and trash all over. And it was impossible to look in any direction and not see obscured movement from a tide of roaches scurrying along the carpet, walls, furniture, etc.

It was like being in some horrible funhouse.

Before I entered, I'd remove my coat, hat, bags or whatever items I'd have to lay down inside the house, then I'd take a deep breath of my last fresh air. Inside, I would stand, sit and walk in such a way as to minimize the surface contact of my body and whatever I was touching. And after I exited, I'd jump up and down, dust out my hair, and do all sorts of dances to make sure I hadn't taken any bugs or eggs with me.

One time I had to use the bathroom, and when I got in there, the basin, the sink, the tub were so grimy I had to close my eyes to pee, and I pulled my shirt cuff over my hand so I didn't have to touch anything.
