I've never seen it. I'll have to now cos I'm intrigued. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I disagree (and yes, I have read the book in the special features) and I DO understand it. It's probably the only movie I know that the more you actually think about, the less it adds up.

For me Donnie Darko was an unexpected surprise, knowing little about the film beforehand and being along to see it by my girlfriend’s friend for free to which I was initially reluctant I may say.
I do think it’s a film designed to impress the viewer on first viewing in that it is intelligent, thought provoking, has extremely witty moments and is generally well crafted. It’s a film that demands much from it’s audience and may perhaps explain why I left the cinema tired and exhausted (although I was a little drunk beforehand!!). It’s easy to see why people are still talking about it and why it has developed some sort of cult status. It is very much atmospheric and satirical, similar to The Crow in some aspects in that it speaks to ‘Generation X’. Although I feel the ending is perhaps a little cheesy I overall feel it’s a movie Id like to see again due to not only the storyline but the excellent performances-the girl who played Gretchen I though was extremely impressive, and its funny moments. Particularly the PTA meeting!

Personally I loved it. I also loved Mulholland Drive. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I went to an advance screening organised by Radio 1 in an old gas-lit cinema in Leeds (no, really). As it was a few weeks before it went on release, all I knew about it was that it had Drew Barrymore in it and was like a David Lynch take on a teen movie.
My buddy & I did nothing but talk about the movie for the whole journey home. We thought it was funny, intriguing, kept us guesing and neither of us thought it was incomprehensible, you just had to mull it over a little bit. I have not looked at the website or the special bit on the DVD (not bought the DVD - yet), so there's no cheating going on - just make sure you watch it sober and don't watch it with one of those mongs who can't shut up even when a film's on.
