This is Thomas Jefferson

Are there any public figures that you would admire, but can't get over a character fault they have?

For me I am thinking of Hunter Thompson

At times his writing used to put me off due to all the violence (or at least violent talk and imagery)
But I came to understand how he was using the violence, and I feel he is one of the most brilliant political writers ever.
But...
He used to beat his first wife
once I found this out it overshadowed all his work for me
I can still enjoy his writing, but this is always in the back of my head.

Actually, I think it's a pretty good thread. I've got nothing to contribute at the moment, but if something comes to mind, I'll take it to the top. smile

Michael Moore. i admire (or used to admire) what he stood for, but he's resorted to the tactics of his counterparts on the right. the means do not justify the ends.

A lit professor I had said who was gay said that as much as he admired Hemingway the little jokes about gays in some of the books always tainted any other meaning to the books

Okay, I didn't "admire" Elvis, but I thought that he was fine (when he was slimmer), especially during the comeback special, wearing that black leather suit, and looking all light-skinned wink (I'm sure he had some black up in him.) But, I grew up hearing that he said: "All black people can do for me is shine my shoes and buy my records." Who knows...maybe this is one of those urban legends. (Like the one where Liz Claiborne allegedly said on Oprah that she didn't make clothes for Black women. Oprah, allegedly, was wearing an outfit by the designer, but after Liz said this and after a commercial break Oprah came back on wearing just a robe!)
