except for the occasional sick mf, i don't think that animal control people enjoy their work. i've talked to a good number of them, and it pains them to have to do this, but the numbers are just overwhelming.

the situation is caused by ignorance and greed. ignorance on the part of the general public as to the staggering number of homeless animals in this country, and greed on the part of breeders and pet stores who continue to breed and sell animals for profit while this kind of mass slaughter is going on.

sigh You're right...so, is the best thing to educate and encourage people to NOT buy animals at pet stores, etc?

there is a lot of great information on http://www.helpinganimals.com , including an update on the efforts to change the situation in Yadkin County.

and yes, do talk to your friends, and encourage them to consider the pound or rescue group for their next companion animal. over 50% of the dogs in the Charlotte shelter are purebreds! there is absolutely no reason to go to a pet store or breeder, and perpetuate the problem.

thanks so much for your interest in this - one person at a time, we can make a huge difference!

If you are looking for a pet, support http://www.petfinder.com

They work with many shelters and rescue groups. It is easy to find exactly what you want out there even if you only look to saving a "friend".
One of my dogs is most likely from a puppy mill and was bought from a pet store (before I knew about what went on). My other dog and a guinea pig are both from animal shelter's or rescues and I will alway rescue from now on.

Please support your local pet shelters and rescues. Drop them a buck or two or buy a bag of food when you see them at the Petsmart or Petco on the weekends. The little guys need it.

Sorry, but I could care less about fucking humans (there are more than enough of them already on this planet)...
IMHO humans are the lowest, most useless and at the same time the most destructive lifeforms on this earth and to say that they're more important than animals is just sick...
If I saw a lil baby drown and at the same time see a dog drown I wouldn't hesitate to lend a helping hand to the dog instead of some baby...

biggrin I'm happy to do SOMETHING...I adopted my kitties from an animal hospital and when I was a reporter I did stories on animal adoptions all the time.
One thing I am concerned about is that if we all stop buying the animals...will that encourage the pet stores/breeders to kill off the ones they have?

Hell no... Humans are fucking selfish morons, humans are only compassionate for something if they themselves gain something from it...
Humans get pets not because they're compassionate to the animal they get, they get pets because they just want an animal to fill their own empty lifes with (because they're lonely or because "a puppy looks cool" or whatever fucking lame reason), they do it solely for themselves without thinking about the animal itself...
Remember humans were the fucking idiots who invented Zoo's and still use 'em... There are still thousands of fucking idiot humans who go to zoo's "to go watch the funny monkeys" that are shacked up in a little fucked up 4 by 4 cage with 4 others and who are being watched by thousands of moronic humans who point and laugh at them, and these same people say they love animals...

few people would not be outraged by this situation - i think the main problem is that people are simply not aware.

see what neversin wrote. also it's easier to have compassion for beings that are basically helpless as opposed to humans which can almost always find a way out of a hard situation through ingenuity if we try hard enough. plus animals bring much more happiness and much less destruction than people as a whole. it isn't complicated.

i abhor violence in all forms. you will hear me make the case against human rights abuses as well as animal rights abuses.

there seems to be a double standard, however. child advocates are never questioned why they don't work for the elderly. people who work on behalf of the developmentally disabled aren't asked why they don't work on environmental issues. but it's assumed that animal rights activists don't care about humans. the fact of the matter is that we do.

human rights and animal rights are closely connected, and hopefully, we will see a time when this connection is no longer questioned.

i should explain that while i find it easier to care about animals, i care deeply about animals and people equally. the environment is in there as well because without it none of us exist.
