How far back does your memory go?

I often hear people narrate these lengthy stories about
the memories they have of their early childhood.

They tell complete anecdotes about what happened to them
when they were 3 or 4 years old and seem to remember all
those things in vivid detail.

Me, I can't really remember anything about the early
stages of my childhood.

Just bits and pieces. Like snapshots. I see images but
they have no story attached to them.

Most of these memories are of things that scared the
living daylights out of me.

Nice memories I seem to have forgotten completely and
irrevocably.

In fact, I can't remember too much from before my 11th
birthday at all.

Same thing, just a few images and a few short "films"
but that's all there is.

We were watching this film of my causin's birthday the
other day, and on it I'm 9 years old. She I and filmed
almost the entire day and I couldn't remember any of it.

I was looking at myself and going "that's me?"

How far back do your memories go? And do you remember
a lot or also just the occasional bits and pieces?

I can honestly remember a man putting money under my pillow when I was in the pram at the top of Park Road in Bargeddie.

My first memory goes back to the age of 3. I know I was that young because my dad was still in the house and he left when I was 4. That memory is of my dad beating my mom up. I remember it just like it happened yesterday... sad

i can remember things back to as early as about 4 years old. not everything, of course, just the important things. and the odd random thought.

the strange thing is i can remember things from about 4-11 better than 12-17. i don't know why. confuse

I guess this image won't help you rethink those memories,
will it?

IstenSzek I'm totally with you on that! I think the only thing that helped me retain any memories at all is my mom's extensive photo albums (we don't have any video recordings).

When I do recall something, it's not very vivid at all - almost dreamlike in the way that its a very vague setting, random plot, and involving people that I don't remember what they're wearing, what their hair looked like, etc.

I don't seem to remember events that were "important" (ones I would like to recall)... I'd have better recollection about a local dance than my dad's wedding (second marriage) when I was 4 and a half, yknow?

To tell the truth, haggis is actually quite nice.
But contary to rumour and stereotypical labelling, we Scots have a very varied diet.
Deep fried pizza and Mars Bars on Tuesdays - both covered in lovely crispy batter.

Yup, same here. I only remember insignificant stuff from
very important events. Like weddings and anniversaries n
such, I only remember the toilets, cuz I was phobic of a
large crowd up until my 15th [still am a bit] so when we
got to such places I'd immediately rush for the toilet n
lock myself in.

The only memories I have of the biggest raves is my father
having to pry open the lock of the door with a fishknife

I'm pretty good with names and faces from long ago. If I saw a picture of my classmates from elementary school, I'm sure I could name them all. And I'm talking about folks from 30 years ago. (Don't ask me jack about what happened yesterday, though.)
