Osamu Tezuka, the creator of "Astro Boy" and "Kimba the White Lion", could be considered the Walt Disney of Japan. From the time he was born, in 1928, until his death in 1989, he completely transformed Japanese anime.
Osamu Tezuka was so interested in drawing that he quit his studies in medicine and stated focusing all his attention on drawing. Growing up in America-occupied post WWII Japan, Osamu Tezuka was quite influenced by Disney's animation, especially Mickey Mouse's big, round eyes. It was because of this that Osamu Tezuka began drawing his characters with large, shimmering, Western eyes.
