Why do we still have body hair?

The human body is amazing. Apart from the appendix there´s barely a single organ in our bodies without a useful function. I can also understand why we have hair on our heads (protection against the cold), why we have eyebrows and eyelashes (protection against things getting in our eyes) and even nasal hair (again protection).

What I don´t understand though, is why evolution hasn´t eradicated the rest of our body hair. What is the point of pubic hair, armpit hair, leg hair and arm hair (not to mention other little hairs that can start to grow in the most awkward places every once in a while)? It offers no protection worth mentioning and it only gets in the way.

Is it only there to annoy us and thereby remind us that we´re merely human? Or does anybody have a better idea?

I´m sure you´re right, but what is it? Try to remember dammit! lol

Is it space aliens that have planted it on us and are monitoring us through microsensors in the hairs? Or is it actually a kind of decoration that is attractive to the rare African bison-zebra-bull with which we could have great sex if we only realized its potential? hmmm Am I getting close?

It's to keep us warm in colder weather. You may have noticed that men of northern European decent are generally more hairy then men of African decent.

But does it really keep them warm? Sure, I can see that some of them are a lot hairier, but it doesn´t seem enough by a long shot.

I guess the answer is that evolution simply isn´t done with the eradication process yet. But it´s about bloody time! It is neither useful nor attractive on either men or women. At least not in my opinion.

The process of evolution is never finished. Just as it's done elimintaing body hair we'll probably end up in another ice age and need it again. Until then there's always electrolisis.

I can explain why we have pubic hair. It's kind of gross though.

My cousin researched this for college. It's purpose is to trap the smells and "pheremones" from down there. It's to stimulate the want for intercourse. Of course this is of no use to us anymore, as I don't think there will ever be a shortage of people wanting to screw.

But there ya go on that part.

I was reading an article which discussed this, and the evolutionary psychiatrist stated that science's best guess as to the purpose of pubic hair is that it serves to indicate when we are physically mature enough to have sex/procreate.

In other words--if there isn't any hair down there, she ain't old enough yet. Funny how society promotes hairlessness for women--some say that a man desiring a hairless woman is an indication that he may like passive, childlike, girly women. Hmmm..... hmmm

You beat me to this anwer, ALT. Body hair is pretty much for sexual display... like a female baboon's red ass, like a male peacock's feathers, etc.

Certain cultures get off on trimming it to excess, but I find hairy guys extremely attractive.

As women go, though, I have to admit to my sexism. I generally find smooth women (except for the genital area) sexier than shaggy ones.

Well, I'd say there's a happy medium there somewhere. I know of men who freak the hell out if a woman lets the hair on her legs or underarms or genitals grow out even the slightest bit. Most men totally get off on the idea of a woman waxing every bit of hair off of her body, even though it often causes swelling, pain and bruising of the vulva. Yet a man would hardly ever consider doing the same for his woman's aesthetic pleasure, or even his sexual pleasure. On the other hand, shaving/waxing can enhance sensation, so there are benefits...
