it makes perfect sense to me, but i also understand that many still struggle with their attachments to impermanent things in this life.

material possessions and leading a life that matters are not mutually exclusive, but eventually, people will realize that the former is not necessary, and possibly even not desirable.

why not?


our attachments to impermanent things, or in other words material possessions, are often a cause of suffering. more "things" doesn't mean more happiness.

we've come a long way in understanding co-dependency as it relates to the interaction of people. personally, i think there is a co-dependency between people and things as well. many people try to find happiness in things, and confuse temporary pleasure with happiness.

i don't begrudge people their belongings, and as a matter of fact, i love to look at beautiful things. but owning these beautiful things wouldn't make me any happier. i have to confess, however, that i sometimes think "i wonder how many needy children could have had a scholarship to our after school program with the money you spent on this rug/car/wide screen tv...
