Snow :) Left this afternoon to get some lunch, and saw snow on the very highest mountains around where I live...had to take some photos of the view around me as I did...
Never been skiing before...if the fires haven't closed down the resorts, I might go this winter. For anyone who's been before, is it easy, or should I plan on several broken bones right off the bat??.. | |

Never been skiing before...if the fires haven't closed down the resorts, I might go this winter. For anyone who's been before, is it easy, or should I plan on several broken bones right off the bat??.. Great! I think skiing is one of the sexiest things you can do with your clothes on. Don't worry about broken bones - the equipment has so many safety features these days that beginners never have severe injuries. Also, the gear is so good that the learning curve is faster than in the past. Here's my tips for beginners (each year I take out a number of beginners - school groups, scout groups, etc.) Clothing: If you stay warm and dry you’ll have fun. Period. You must have water resistant pants, jacket and gloves. Borrow good ones, if necessary. If you try to ski in jeans or sweatpants, you’ll be sorry. As conditions change throughout the day, you should layer your clothing, adding or removing as needed. Skiing is exercise and your body will generate heat so don’t bundle up too heavily. (For example, I’ll probably start with long johns, insulated ski pants, one pair warm socks, a regular undershirt, a lightweight knit turtleneck shirt, a down ski jacket, good insulated ski gloves, a wool hat and sunglasses. If the weather gets much colder I might add a pair of sweatpants, a long john shirt and/or a sweatshirt). Goggles are good to have when the snow starts blowing. Bring a daypack and put your warmer/extra clothes in a locker near the ski area, so that you have access to them during the day if you become cold or need your goggles. You should wear one pair (and only one pair) of good socks that will cushion your feet without being too bulky. Your feet should not get cold in ski boots. Bring AT LEAST one extra pair of gloves. You may find that your gloves are not as waterproof as you think or you might get snow inside them. Don’t count on drying out wet gloves, socks, long johns, etc. if you're staying overnight – just bring enough for several days. Safety: Take a beginner level lesson; everyone should have a lesson or prior experience before setting out on their own. Make sure you ski with at least one buddy. Make sure you bring sunscreen, lip protection and sunglasses or ski goggles. Other stuff: Strengthen your abs and hip and thigh muscles and get loose by doing a few stretching exercises every day. Bring some quarters for the lockers. Remember - Don’t ski alone. Don’t ski beyond your ability. Don’t do anything stupid. Have fun. *****************************************
