So, you're saying an Asian person shouldn't joke around about Asian stereotypes, and a black person shouldn't laugh at those stereotypes? And white people shouldn't make jokes about "white trash" or WASPs?

I think people can take political correctness too far.
Race and other serious topics are absolutely viable material for comedy. Good comedy often has serious undertones. Self-effacing humour is often great for an easy laugh too, and it's good to be able to laugh at one's self. Example - a lot of the great black American comics have built their early careers on ridiculing, parodying and debunking racial stereotypes about black people... and sometimes playing with such issues, especially when speaking to a predominately white audience. Sure, racism isn't funny or cool. Does that mean I can't make jokes about common cultural stereotypes about Irish people? Of course I can. Of course if anyone else did it, I'd kick their arses

I don't think it's admirable in any way for people to passively let people know what they are thinking/feeling. If something is bothering you kelley, save us all the trouble of sifting through your posts that always imply (and yet, at the same time, never seem to say much at all, despite the vast number of them) and spit it out for gods sake!
sorry in advance, ian... ehehe I mean, like, where is the sun?

My view - if you confront stereotypes and illustrate how silly and ludicrous they are, you remove their power.
If you stick your head in the sand and pretend such views don't exist, we really don't get anywhere.

definitely, and the stereotypes that build up this kind of humor have to have had sprouted up from somewhere (eg. other groups making fun of them and classifying them as one way or another) using the n word is much, MUCH different than from what we're talking about... you are comparing apples with oranges I mean, like, where is the sun?

I think it depends upon the people involved and the circumstances. It's not always bad or insulting--a lot of the time, like in paintsprayer's thread, it's used to make fun of racism and show how silly stereotypes are. And sometimes making jokes about it is empowering and takes back the power of the words.
One of my very best friends is Korean, but was brought here as an infant and is 100% American. One of the first times we did anything together, we went to a U2 concert with some friends and as we went through the McDonald's drivethru, she says to me "should I pretend I don't speak English"? We laughed our asses off, and it told me she's dealt with all kinds of assumptions on white people's part about her and has learned to laugh AT them and herself and it doesn't hurt her.

I disagree. If you act as if some words and views are so scary and evil that they must be censored, removed from one's mind and never spoken... to me that just gives more power to such views, more power than they deserve. I prefer direct confrontation. Racist viewpoints are inherently stupid and flawed and usually such views collapse under the slightest interrogation. Better to confront such views and illustrate how ridiculous they are, rendering them powerless. My opinion of course.
