Rubbish!

Prozac is the Asperin of the new millenium, just take two and go to bed dear. They presscribe at the drop of a hat to keep you coming back and paying HMO fees.

Or maybe you might actually need it, what do I know?

I was on Prozac. I would see another doctor who may be able to find some non-medicated solutions to your depression. I didn't feel depressed while I was on Prozac, but I didn't feel anything else either.

It affects different people in different ways. for somew it is good, for others it isnt. try it out for at least 6-8 weeks and if you still are depressed go back to the doctors and get him to suggest something else. Also check he isnt giving you a really high dosage to begin with

You know what, Red? I don't remember what dosage I was taking. It may have been too high but I know I didn't like the way that it made me feel so I stopped taking it on my own.

great advice red...im proud of you worship

the fact is that depression is a very normal thing these days...i know that sigh but prozac isnt always the best drug...there are others out there...you just need to see which one works best for you...

you may also do best from a combination of meds...thats up to you and your doctor to figure out...your first step is to understand that you are unhappy...and then make a choice to do something about it...hug

i wish you much success in killing the sadness in your soul...it can be hard...but well worth it woot!

Yes, and remember, do not rely on it too much. Yes take it as prescribed, but it is only a drug, if you are unhappy about something, look at your lifestyle, the people you hang around with, your work etc etc and if they are adding to your depression try and deal with that too. But just take one day at a time, there is no rush to change ones life or problems over night, just readdress who you are and who you want to be, where you are and where you want to go. Both combined will help a bit hug and you still got all us nutty on the Org to cheer you up! :wink

Depressions are increasing in western societies and they have to be taken very seruiously. They can be cured easily when diagnosed early. Gladly enuff, I never had to suffer from them. However, I believe they need to be more recognized by society as an actual disease. Many people risk losing their jobs when they stay home because of depressions. Its still looked upon as a lame excuse, lazyness, something that can be overcome by willpower.

Depression is actually one of the leading causes of death--not just because of suicide, but side effects of depression include hypertension and heart disease, not to mention other illnesses.

Some people still view depression as being "weak", or that it's all a matter of willpower and snapping out of it. But the science is showing major chemical changes in the brain due to depression/anxiety, and people can actually have lesions form on their brains if they allow their depression/anxiety to go untreated.

Admittedly, it's not 100% physical. Longer lasting depressive episodes are usually brought on by some traumatic event--a loss or humiliation, usually. Some people are better equipped genetically to handle and get over depression than others are, just like some of us have blue or brown eyes, so not everyone needs or should be on medication. I have always advocated a combination of medication and talk-therapy or a support group for clinically depressed people--not just drugs. But for some people, the medication has to come first just to get them to the point where they can function in their day to day lives, and then start therapy and address any underlying psychological issues.

There's a really great book about all of this, btw, by Andrew Solomon called "The Noonday Demon--An Atlas of Depression". It won a literary prize a few years ago. It goes into detail on the history of depression (it's not something new, by any means), treatments, personal experiences of himself and others, society's views, etc.

My doctor said that to me too. I do not take the pills. I have a close family member who did not benfit from them. I don't think they work. I meditate and pray. I spend time alone working through my feelings. I'm not saying it cures everything but it helps sometimes. My twocents
