spay/neuter

I spoke with a friend of mine a while ago and he told me that he has lots of cats, but he doesn't spay or neuter them. Eventually they wander off and survive somehow on their own. Presumably to procreate and cause more homeless cats with probably miserable lives. He actually said he felt it would be cruel to have them fixed!
What can I say to him? Should I interfere?

Tell him how fantastic it is that not getting a cat fixed means that there will be so many they will starve to death. That always makes me smile..and the idea of them running away to procreate, yeah, that is good too, so they can get killed in the road, or as one was behind my home, torn apart by a skunk..which brings us to rabies, and children love kitties, but rabid kitties just want to chomp on something...I especially enjoy going to the humane society and hearing about the many, many cats that are put down each DAY, as there are so many out there. OR the weird asses who torture stray animals.. Yeah, in other words, I would say something. We are to be responsible to the creation around us, and that includes helping animals have good lives.

Yes i did, i have three cats and they all come and go as they please, they don't live in the house and are quite happy outside.

We have a big garden and they are very well feed, they know when the grub is up and are waiting outside. Very intelligent my cats.

I don't neuter them or interfere with them as animals, they are pets in the sense i look after them. They know me and respond to me as any pet does. But i won't have them neutered. If they have babies i feed them, as i have done.

They eventually grow up and move on, it's natural and normal for cats. They are animals in the final analysis.

Procreation is apart of life and so is the fact that animals DO survive on their own. Millions of animals have done so for millions of years, long before we were around.

Might be a good idea to go to a vet's office or anti-cruelty society and get some printed information for him.

My animals lead good lives and are happy, i look after them well..but no, neutering is not something i would do.

what about the males who get females pregnant that you don't know about?
and there isn't as much wildlife anymore for them to feed on and when they "move on", unless you live in a town infested with a huge amount of rats and stuff, many of the kittens from the females your males have gotten pregnant, will starve.
i wish you had told me before though that you feed those that you're aware of. would have saved me a bit of worry hug

do you go down to your animal shelter and euthanize some of the cats resulting from this kind of shortsightedness?

I feed all my animals, when they have babies i feed them..sometimes they don't come back. And i can honestly say that i've never had a sick cat nor have any of the three got injured on the road.

How do those females know to come to your house to have their babies? I'm talking about females that don't belong to you, but get impregnated by your tomcats while they're out. And those females' babies.

I guess those cats know that their is food around and can smell it, they know they will be feed. You can't stop cats getting into your garden nor can you stop them from eating.

all the more reason to either neuter them or keep them inside.
i'm sure there are many kittens out there who are struggling now.

It's difficult to control any population problem, even human. Animals are animals and by instinct will procreate.

Libs, I am not bashing you at all, as I don't wanna play that..the one thing we all need to remember is that as natural as procreation is, and the survival for millions of years...we domesticated these animals, as we have many others, and that is where the natural selection process ends, because we are generating more and more housepets.

DO cats other than yours come around? be honest now. wink

unless your cats are all freakily infertile, there are cats out there who they have fathered by them.

im just thinking...how old are they? if they're over a year old, they've probably gotten a dozen females pregnant combined. then when those reach a year old, they reproduce..it's like rabbits. not to mention that a male or female doesn't become infertile after one litter, so...i can't even do the math.

libs, are you under the impression that the male continues to have a sex drive when he's fixed? because i have two males and i can tell you that's definitely not true. they express no sexual frustration or pain at all.

plus they're damn cute when they come home from the vet with the meds wearing off biggrin

are they a domesticated species? if so, their ability to hunt effectively has been worn down genetically through their instincts becoming less necessary.

to starve to death. they don't have a chance out there and if you're not feeding them i doubt all those numbers of cats you've caused are being fed by the rare person who will take care of a stray.

I said already other cats come around when they smell food or grub is left over from my fellas tucking in. I ain't gonna stop them.

No doubt they have impregnated others females, if i see any babies running around i'll look after them.

How do you know for 100% postive they don't have any sexual desires?, we're only assuming that.

Their sexual organs are removed. Ask any vet or look it up, they stop having sexual feelings without the parts.

And believe me I would know if they did. A tomcat in heat WILL make it QUITE obvious.
