"in the early 1960s will remember the name Kitty Genovese. The
circumstances of her murder shocked the nation, and perhaps other
parts of the world as well. She lived in Kew Gardens, a residential
neighborhood in the Borough of Queens in New York City. One evening
she was stabbed to death on a street near her home. She was not
killed by one fatal thrust, but by a number of lesser wounds. Her
assailant stabbed her, she broke away from him and ran, he chased
her, caught her, stabbed her again, she broke away again, and so on
until she finally succumbed to multiple stab wounds. What I have
described so far is all too common a crime and did not shock America.
However, all of the time this was happening she was screaming for
help. Investigation showed that thirty-eight of her neighbors heard
her screams. Not one of them did anything to help her. I do not
mean only than none of them went downstairs and out onto the street
to intervene directly. Not one of them even bothered to call the
police. (One person, as I recall, did do something. He got up and
closed his window because her screams were distracting him while he
was watching television.)"

diffusion of responsibility:decrease the individual sense of responsibility for taking action in an emergency because of the presence of othe r bystanders:the gretaer the number of bystanders, the less likely each individual is to act.

Help not given because of failure to pay attention

not given because of misinterpretation of a non emergency

not given because assumption of soemone eolse should do something

help not given becuase of lack of knowledge, skills, and/or training

help not given for fear of negative consequences or positive motivation

Yes, this is a lesson but I don't think people do necessarily learn by mistakes of the past, unfortunately.

I can only speak for myself. Whenever I've heard or witnessed a disturbance that looks like it's getting violent, I've called the police. I have stopped to help people who've looked ill on quite a few occassions and if I've witnessed a car crash, I usually call the emergency services too.

I think people are afraid to get involved nowadays, and I can understand that because we live in a "fear" environment. But to me, part of being human is showing compassion to others. I would rather stop and do something than walk on by and wrestle with my conscience about it.

I'm not perfect in many, many ways, but in this regard I do believe I have a strong sense of social responsibility.

In this day and age of:

'Have you been injured in a fall or accident?
Claim your money right NOW...

..it does make u wonder.

Luckily, day-2-day life isnt always like that.

But u do hear such horror stories of people being sued 4 the silliest things - America seems 2 be the leader in that field.

I heard a few years ago that many doctors are now afraid 2 stop at a scene of an accident in case they themselves are sued by the families 4 not saving their loved ones.

Of course, if they dont stop and get found out, they get sued anyway.

It's a fucked up world folks...

Humanitarianism is an important principle, but the reality is we've got some deeply evil people out there who exploit others' sensibilites. I've heard stories -- urban legends at least -- of people feigning distress to attract good-natured solo passers-by, only to turn on them.

I'd help, but very cautiously. And not to be sexist, but if I were a woman, I'd be more likely to help by calling the cops or an ambulance and monitoring from a slight distance rather than stepping into a situation myself.
