TRON

My dog just ate a rather large animal.

I am so fucking mad at her right now. A couple months ago, she found a rabbit's nest and killed one of the 4 babies before I found out about it. Later, they were all gone so I'm hoping the mother reclaimed them and moved them to a safer spot.

Tonight out of nowhere she started gagging and coughed up a huge football size ball of organs, muscle, bones and hair. I'm guessing it was either a cat or an opossom by the size and color of the hair. I don't know what to do.

She seems to be fine and not too sick, but I don't know what's gotten into her. She used to be so gentle and wouldn't hurt a thing. This is the 2nd time I know of in the last 2 months that she's killed. She knows to stay away from me right now cuz I'm super pissed. I wish I knew how to correct this behavior.

Sometimes. But rarely. That's more my brother's kinda thing. wink

He'll let her go at it for 10 minutes at least.

Call your vet and ask what s/he'd recommend doing, some sort of aversion therapy perhaps?

Sorry, Tron, it's got to be pretty gross.

Maybe you should puke on your dog and see how she likes it?! wink

It's not so much the puke in the house. That's happened before and it's not a big deal to take care of.

I just don't like the idea of her hunting all of a sudden. It's just not like her.

Especially if this was someone's cat. mad

Your dog sounds like a walking Nine Inch Nails video.

Seriously though, you can't really condition your dog to understand the morality of letting smaller creatures live in peace when its nature seems to be something different. The only consolation to your dog's behavior is that at least it's the food chain in action in its most primal, intended-upon form.

Meanwhile, the best you can do is keep a close eye on the dog and roll with the punches...grizzly though they may be...barf

I know this is true. The thing is, she was never one to chase after animals. She would always watch them peacefully, even when they were close. She would always try to make friends with cats that she met, even though they usually were afraid of her. I know it's just instinct, but she's 5 years old and this is a recent turn of events. Maybe she's a late bloomer. LOL.

maybe it was already dead.

plus, before, it was a baby, so maybe she didn't know it was alive. maybe she's not hunting, but scavenging.

It was fresh. Animals don't just come and die in my yard. Plus, she was out for longer than usual. I need to just keep a better eye on her I guess.

See, I chose a house with a fenced yard so my animals could have some sense of freedom. They were used to going wherever they wanted when I lived with my parents on the lake. I don't monitor her as much as I should when she's outside and lately she's been getting into trouble. If you knew her, you would understand how this is totally out of character.

Just a couple of thoughts: If she is out in the yard for extended period of times (e.g., while you are at work), see if you can limit that time, and spend as much time out there with her as you can, just observing her behavior. This may give you some clues as to any patterns, etc.

Also, if you don't already, walk her on a regular basis, especially in an area where there may be cats, squirrels, etc. If she responds to the sight of another animal and wants to chase, you can gently turn her head and body away from the animal and run her ears through your hands to calm her down (base of ear to tip). I learned this in a T-Touch session with our younger dog, who can be quite aggressive toward other animals.

I hope this helps - good luck!

Thanks. I'll remember this.

She doesn't stay out for too long. Anywhere from a couple minutes to a half hour is the norm.

Whoa. I don't know if I could deal with that kind of thing. Good luck with correcting her behavior. Sounds like IB has some good tips.
