PLEASE don't do this! alright, i gotta vent...
as some of you know, i'm a part-time petsitter - to me, it's kind of a hobby that pays well. i love doing this, except for the times i have to witness neglect or even abuse. well, this weekend, i'm witnessing a case of abuse, and it bothers me tremendously, because i don't think people are even aware of what they are doing! these people live in a beautiful, half-million dollar home, and they have two dogs. one of them, a lab mix, wears a bark collar. for those of you who are not familiar with the concept - it is a shock collar that is placed tightly around the dog's neck and puts an electric shock into the dog's neck everytime he barks. this dog is a sweet, beautiful, high-spirited dog. but everytime he wants to express his exuberance, he gets an electric shock. even worse, everytime the OTHER dog barks in his vicinity, he also gets shocked! this torture device has turned a perfectly nice dog into a fearful, scared animal. it breaks my heart to see this! PLEASE - if you or somebody you know uses this type of cruel device, take it off your dog immediately! there are non-violent training methods to reduce excessive barking, such as positive reinforcement or T-Touch. this HAS GOT to stop! thanks for indulging me - this is weighing heavily on my heart and mind today!

Why havent these medieveval contraptions been desposed of? What's the harm in just giving the dog away or being put down peacefully instead of treating it inhumanely? The sooner people start treating animals like humans the better. This is sad, sad news.

OMG - that breaks my heart too, that poor dog. Did you try talking to the owners about this? Maybe they're not aware of the harm that they're inflicting on that poor animal. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

OMG sweetie...that sounds completely awful!!!
Are you going to talk to the owners about it, or not? That's like putting a collar on person for "talking". well, I know some people that would benefit from such a device... but damn...it's a puppy!! I worked with a guy who increased the voltage of one of bark collar for a friends dog. He installed a capacitor that held a greater charge, the thing was he had to try it on the dog to see if it would work. So he put it around the dogs neck and went inside. He said the dog barked once then again and yelped both times, then it barked again and there was silence, he thought to himself must be working. He sat around with his friend and had a couple of beers and thought nothing of it, they went out a little later to check on the dog and it was lying there dead. Well, I guess the owner got it's wish, the dog never barked again.

i agree wth Jen, those collars are just terrible, and should be banned in the states but i really believe that AmeriKKKa believes "its just a fucking dog" they dont know any better, when that dog turns around and mauls your ass for the abuse U put on it, then you will change your fucking tune. deeply saddened that these collars are still available.

I've heard of those things but never seen one. They should be outlawed. It's like de-dog'ing the dog, you know what I mean? There are better ways of stopping a dog that barks excessively. I've never been a fan of PETA, but does that organization ever put its energy into getting the word out about that ignorant collar? Or trying to get it outlawed? Or are they just worried about KFC and McDonalds? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Animal abuse isn't unique to America, it happens all over the world. In contrast to people in America who abuse animals, there are also millions of us (including myself) who live here and love animals. [This message was edited Sat Oct 18 12:28:18 PDT 2003 by Tom]

Pisses me off that those kind of things are even legal 2 buy.
I cant believe the amount of abuse animals are put through and the many just stamd by and let it happen. Only last week near me a horse show was being held that Prince Charles was patron of (although didnt attend) where a pony was beaten 2 death with an iron bar - supposedly three people were seen (2 men and a woman) trying 2 'coax' the pony in2 its travel box with said bar - when the vet arrived 2 tend 2 the poor stricken animal, he was shocked 2 find it lying there with half of its skull missing, and its 'owners' nowhere 2 be found. Police are now investigating. Strange how these people were spotted, yet no-one stepped in 2 stop it. Or how about the recent story in some of the national papers in England where a pregnant bitch had a 10llb BARBELL weight strapped 2 her and was thrown in2 a river? Pets...the ultimate in 'throwaway culture'. Just fucking unreal. The sheer cruelty of people defies logic and belief sometimes, it really does. Back 2 the topic at hand, not good, they should be banned. End of story. www.peta.org [This message was edited Sat Oct 18 12:49:01 PDT 2003 by bananacologne]

My uncles neighbor used to have 2 doby pinchers that barked day and night. The y ended up removing the voice box of the one that would bark more... from then on it would bark but all we wouls here was a coughing sound if you were up close to it. If they would have spent more time with their dogs they wouldn't have barked so much. I feel ya babe!! To Sir, with Love

thank you all for your input, and for posting some of the truly gruesome stories... only if we talk about this can we make a change!
quick update - i got permission from my boss to remove the collar, and in response, the dog let out a couple of serious barks (and with no repercussions this time!) i'm also going to have a friend of mine, who is a certified T-Touch practitioner, contact them to see if she can help. and in response to Supernova's question, here's some stuff PETA has put out on the issue: http://www.peta.org/feat/...014_15.pdf i remember that they put out a website about this, too, but i can't seem to find it. thanks again - you guys rock!
