EDIT: As I think about it, different approaches to horror serve different purposes. These are my favorites from the standpoint they work as classics or keep the genre literarily intelligent. These aren't necessarily "scary" by today's standards. Some horror fans think some of these suck, because they rely on story and/or atmosphere as opposed to gross-out value and the element of shock, which are too often confused nowadays with a real ethos of dread or the fantastic. (I sound like such a snobbish asshole sometimes) rolleyes...

Based on Stephen King's novel about a new England family beset by a murderous terror: the family dog. Intense.

I've read every single thing Stephen King has written, but I got a quarter of the way through that book, and stopped. That was 16 years ago, and I still haven't wanted to read it or see the movie.

No, I just couln't read about the downward spiral of that dog's mental state because of rabies. I mean, you know he's going to get killed in the end, and I just felt bad because he couldn't help what was happening to him.

Always been more in2 the more psychological horror than the whole splatter/gore-fest stuff. Fear of the unknown is the ultimate scare...
Some of my faves:

Signs (watched this 4 the 1st time recently, and have 2 say I havent been so creeped out by a movie in YEARS. Very cool).

Psycho

Halloween

Jaws

Salems Lot

Nosferatu

(if u get the chance, check out the fantastic 'Shadow of The Vampire' starring John Malchovich, Udo Kier & Eddie Izzard - it's a clever little movie about how it 'may' have come 2 be).

Blair Witch
(Yeah, yeah - NOW it may look crap - but was lucky enough 2 catch a preview of it in a small cinema before the hype took off, and trust me...NOT knowing much about it helped in every way possible!)

Ringu

Grafitti Bridge. Truly horrific.
shake

Have been lucky enough 2 meet Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface)
Nice guy. Imposing, but nice!

...and Clive Barker who is a friend of a friend.
Had dinner with him and his boyfriend David
(a TOTAL hunk!) Fave film of his: 'Nightbreed'
