All I can say is, this movie was OUTRAGEOUS.

I know people are gonna detest this movie, others will worship it.

I don't even want to talk about the movie itself. I can't really, it was just so crazy.

I saw the movie this evening, and Imust say it wa one of the most violent, bloody and graphic films I've ever seen. But it also kicked ass!

I cant wait to see this!!

Er... sorry to be the blacksheep, but I was a weee bit disappointed.

***WARNING: VERY MINOR SPOILERS***

There were many, many good things about Kill Bill, Vol. 1-- good character mix and development (I was even fully engaged by relatively minor characters like Go Go); witty, but uncontrived dialogue; clear, rationed backstory development, especially given Quentin's trademark nonlinear chronology; an eclectic funk, Japanese surfer music, hip hop, folk soundtrack; downright bold cinematic experiments (anime, CGI, wire work, Kung Fu Theatre-style bloodshed, black and white vignettes, split screen, censored dialogue, Tokyo monster movie-style sets, etc.); simultaneously the most realistically brutal and the most cartoon-like violence in recent film history; a totally anything-can-happen unpredictability; and a really effective cliff hanger! Quentin is probably the premier MTV era storyteller and an avid student of film history and cross-cultural trend. But somewhere in all the homage to 70s and 80s camp and all things chic, Quentin's endless stylizations became annoyingly distracting and obtuse even for an ego as big as his.

All in all, it's wild, pulpy, colorful and generally fun. An adult comic book onscreen. But even pizza -- with pepperoni, extra cheese, olives, barbeque sauce, honey, peaches, chicken, stadium mustard, chocolate syrup, hot sauce, vanilla bean ice cream, nougat, skittles, malt vinegar, etc. -- can have too many individually workable elements to work well in a single statement. (Sorry to mix metaphors.)

Grade: B-/C+

...And although the fight scenes were fair, I think the choreography could have been way more exciting.

Jack Black and talk about his big ego. Has Quentin participated in any press, tv or print, for this film? What ego are you talking about? The film is different and very fun and funny.

I agree Quentin is gifted, if only because he keenly understands what dynamics people have loved most about certain film, music and print genres and capitalizes on reworking them and cleverly weaving them together. With that, he's one of my favorite ... um... "borrowing directors." (And don't get all mad -- all artists borrow.) But I suppose it was said best by a guy I overheard in the theatre: Tarantino's sort of showing symptoms of that sickness where a writer/director knows he's good and starts to think he can get away with using anything and everything in the way of literary device.

Again, stylization is awesome -- even vital, especially for Tarantino's brand of pulp fiction. All the elements I mentioned above -- from the quirky music to the use of anime vignettes and different film stocks to the use of cartoon violence to a mixed-up story timeline -- are fascinating and proven effective. But Quentin's use of anything and everything trendy now and yesterday just came off as a clumsy, cheap shot and too much. It's like a person putting on all of their best clothes -- at the same time -- because they work well separately. I think Tarantino has more clever potential than that.

As for his big ego, I've not seen Quentin interview for Kill Bill... yet. But I have seen him interview before, and to me at least, it's clear he know he's one of the most innovative and watched directors out there, and rather enjoys it... as he should. He goes nuts when someone critiques his work and he even spoofed himself in Spike Lee's Girl 6. He's a cool guy, but all I'm saying is he thinks really highly of himself and his filmmaking choices.

A few people told me that Quinten was drunk during his Leno appearance to promote the movie. I would have loved to have seen it.

I needed this movie. It was...cathartic for my frustrated soul...

It was ok. The cartoon was funny as hell though.
The fights scenes were too fantastic.

But seriously, though, it was pretty cool. I loved the way O-Ren's team looked. School uniforms with face masks. It was dope. I wonder when Vol. 2 is coming out. You know they had to cut it down into 2 volumes because it was about 3 hours long.

And if any of you do not know what I'm talking about, you're just going to have to go out and see the movie.

Aside from marketting, I think the overwhelming number of styles, mixed-genres and tributes was part of the reason it was split into 2. Watching twice as much of that movie in one sitting would have been a sensory overload.

Yeah, I'm glad it was cut into 2 volumes. I drank me a large soda and could not wait until the flick was over to work it's way out my body. If I were to watch volumes 1 & 2 after a large soda...game over.
