It's on my list. I have read good reviews of it, all the special features, and I believe a new song (or a song that was left out of the theatrical release) is included as well as a documentary on transforming the film into the musical.

I think after watching that, I realized that Disney (and animation in general) was shifting its focus to adults.

I remember my 7 year old niece turning to me after the movie asking "What would happen to me if my parents died, like Simba?"

I was like whoa! eek you ain't even supposed to be all on that level right now. Who thinks of mortality at 7 years old?

If you've seen some of the behind the scenes footage of how they put this movie together it's fascinating. The storyboarding and animation itself is a lot of work. But gratifying for all involved.

And the casting for the voices of the animals were perfect: Jeremy Irons as Scar, both Cheech Marin and Whoopi Goldberg's skank ass as the voices of hyenas, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the cub Simba, etc. The first time I saw it was on video tape, when Simba's father was killed and Simba was cast out, so to speak, I remember thinking; this might be a lot to take for kids watching.

Every home should have a copy of The Lion King.

Did she cry?

Yeah, she was pretty upset at the bit when the father died. However, she understands that Scar is a bad dude and she still has the childhood dillusion that good will always prevail.
