did anyone ever read The Sneetches by Suess..about the creatures with stars on their belly's?

That's true, we would probably starting judging someone regarding their height, weight, eye color, hair color, etc. etc. I never read that book by Suess, can you tell us what it is about? biggrin

Its basically what you just stated..thos e who had stars on their bellys were made ot be a superior class..then thoise with styars ended up being on t ebottom pof th e totem pole so to speak inn a reverse role etc...showng that appearances etc was all bullshit..

did u ever see that film in school about the teacher who did that socialology study on her elementary class by giving special preferences to the kids in her class with blue eyes..then the next day to the kids with brown eyes taking away the blue eyed childrens priveledges etc?

had not heard about this? do tell? or provide a link?

here is ones synopsis:
Basically a
midwestern elementary teacher wanted to teach her students (all white)
about prejudice and did so by creating two pools of students based on eye
color. One day (or several days), the blue eyed students were considered
'superior', had preferential seating, tasks always given good marks or comments,
if they struggled, they were still trying hard, etc.. vs the brown eyed students
who had to sit in the back rows, if they completed their tasks, they did 'ok'
(or might even have been queried on whether they cheated), if they
struggled it was because they were stupid. THen after a day or so, the
teacher switched, and the brown eyes because superior and the blue eyes
inferior.

What most intrigued me however was how the children reacted. THe
children who were deemed 'inferior' either reacted by striking out, or else
seemed to just accept that they weren't as smart, and the 'superior'
children even when they were on free time at recess continued to act
superior and not play with the other children or would put them down.
THe film ends on a positive note, that after the experiment ended the
class discussed in depth what happened and reverted back to normality
but when they tracked the children later in life (I think this took place
in the 60s), those kids seemed much more tolerant and hold less
prejudiced views than many of their peers, the belief being they had
been there and knew what it felt like.

So in teaching my kids about prejudice I try to have them understand
what it might feel like by saying what if someone didn't like you or
said you were stupid because you had brown hair or were too short.
It's not a nice feeling to be judged on what you look like, wear, or
your hair color, skin color, church you go to (or don't go to), etc.
Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who do just that.
But it is wrong and you should judge people on who they are inside,
not what they look like outside. And people who do judge from the
outside are being ignorant and end up hurting others and themselves
because they never give people a chance to see what they are really
like.

And this is from a one-day experiment. Imagine what kind of impact this has on a culture if it is done systematically for 400 years.

Well also to me it spells out that this type of behavior, phenomena or what have you is damn near endemic to the human race in any society etc...if ten people were separated form society and put on another planet etc they would find problems with each other etc

True. When it is institutionalized however that basic human tendency is given power that wreaks all kind of havoc.

Yes,..and it is human nature to some point try to institutionalize hate...or my theory is it is a less evolved man that does this..connecting the Jungian philosophy of the Unconccious Collective...somewhere along the cycle some men rises up and breaks that uncivilized connection..that primal connection etc..it's hard for me to explain etc...

I believe this is the same woman that did this sort of experiment on Oprah's show about 5 years ago with Oprah's audience without them knowing what was really going on. Did anybody see that episode? One of the few times Oprah was worth watching, for me.

Yes, it was more than 5 years though maybe 10 cuz I remember we tried to book her for our college lecture series that same time I saw it. That's when Oprah used to be socially and politically relevant.

I mean really, who the hell do they think they are, saying they don't like this person or that person because of the color of their skin. I mean, who cares about that anyway, what REALLY matters is the person inside.

What brought this on is I watched the Dr. Phil Show, and there was a mixed race couple on (she was white, and he was Mexican). The woman's uncle was on there, and lemme tell ya, this guy was sooo damn ignorant, he was making me sick. He was making comments about how he no longer loved his niece because she married outside of her race. He also denied causing a problem with his racist views. What an asshole!! He was lucky I wasn't sitting in the audience during that show, or I would have been sitting there booing at him and telling him to get off the damn stage and to get a clue!! Racist people really make me want to vomit. disbelief

I'm white, but I have friends of different races. I could never look down my nose at someone because their skin color is different than mine. I love black people!!

Racist people suck edit

I am white too, but I always HAD & DO HAVE friends of different colors. I dont even notice what color a person is. My main interest in a person has NOTHING 2 do with what color or race or nationality they R! I look DEEP within that persons soul. Through my life, some of my BEST friends have been black. They were awesome. The story U tell in your post is really sad! A person such as that woman's uncle couldnt be MORE ignorant. I guess its "ingrained" in lots of people 2 "keep 2 your own kind" from their very narrow minded & uninformed, uneducated upbringing, that usually stems from a long line of hatred and fear in ones family, and of course our society, which plays the biggest part in the mess. But, seeing a person like the one U talk about above, is definately sad 2 witness ANYWHERE. Its very difficult 2 understand why someone would disown a member of their family because they R with a partner of a different race & 4 ANY reason 4 that matter. I really cant tolerate ppl like that!

I love that song, katt, that is one of my favorite Prince songs. The video was good too.

dancing jig micheals booty! shake and smile... they all seem so happy doing that video it comes across that way 2 me anyway smile

Never forget about the past, but dont bring the past to the future, make the future NOW, make the change...

Now let prince do the talking...

Lie down, fair 1, and come away
Till the rain is over and gone
G-G-Gimme the beat now (Face the music)
Lead line (Face the music)

If the air is a little thick in this room 2nite
I reckon it's the result of an onslaught of separatist rookies
Overcome by this colorful sight

How is it that U everytime
Regurgitate the racist lines that keep us apart?

She'd be a much-better-off-left fool (Face the music)

If we never heard about the evils that those before us committed
Then how my dear, tell me now how my dear, tell me now how now would we know

And then the band say

Why those before us hated each other

I'd rather believe they never did
I'd rather believe (I'd rather, I'd rather believe)
That there's hope 4 a kid

And if he imitates the best
I guess that's what I'll try 2 be
And I will let the rest dissolve with my guitar underneath the sea

I really cant tolerate ppl like that!

clapping clapping Very well said! woot!

bottom line is that there are idiots in every shape, size and color. why just narrow it down to idiots of one race when there are idiots everywhere? forget passing judgement on race, pass judgement on whoever is a proven idiot.

the world will be a more happy place if we can just segregate the idiots from the non-idiots.

but i guess idiocy is subjective. sigh

There are a lot of wonderful posts here against prejudice - I applaud you all!! As some of you already said, what matters is what's on the inside, in a person's heart, nothing else. Not skin color, not age, not size or shape, not whether they have lots of $$ or don't have much at all, not the car they drive, not their hair style, not whether or not they have a tongue ring, etc. etc. etc.

One thing that has always struck me, since I was little, and some of my white birth family are racially prejudiced, is that it's just plain stupid. If a person hates another person because their skin color is different, will they hate someone else who happens to make more $$ than they do (yes, I learned, probably so), will they hate someone else who is positive and happy most of the time (yes, I learned, probably so), will they hate someone else who doesn't believe in their religion (yes, I learned, probably so), and on and on and on. The list is never ending if you want to go that way in life. It doesn't make any sense. It diminishes the life of the person hating - can't they see that? Loving people and enjoying people and having fun with people and sharing your life with people and making lots of friends is SO MUCH MORE REWARDING - it is SO WONDERFUL TO LIVE A HAPPY LIFE than a negative hateful existence.

Judging is not for us to do at all to anyone at any time. Only God, the Father, our Creator, is worthy of making any judgements. And GOD LOVES each and every one of us - all the time. We ought not to do any judging whatsoever.

This whole thread is very interesting. Read all the comments and looked at peoples reactions.
The one thing that I keep thinking of...is the org. One of the great things about this site is we all talk to each other and usually have no idea what skin colour that orger is.
Who cares!!!
I love that I can talk to someone fron another part of the world who might have a different skin colour, religion and background to me. big grin
I have people here I would call friends and what they look like has not even come up in any conversation. I can't tell you guys how much I love interacting with you.
