No, no, no, no, no...TCM is like "Fargo." It SAYS it's based on a true story, but it's not really. TCM was inspired by the Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein--who also inspired Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill from "Silence of the Lambs." Tobe Hooper--director of the first TCM--loved the Gein story and simply transposed it to Texas. But NO...there was NO family of murderous Texans and Leatherface was only inspired by Gein--he didn't REALLY exist. Gein didn't use a chainsaw to kill people.

I'm probably not going to sleep after hearing the answer but I have to ask, what did Ed Gein do exactly? "I ordered no broth! Away with ye lest my cane find your backside!!"- Ralph Wiggum, Actor.

I saw the movie Ed Gein (why, I don't know) and from what I remember, he would kill people and then sew their skin together and wear it. Ick.

Not only did he grow up about 40 minutes south of me, but he was into young gay men of color! Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

the original really did not bother me much. but i saw it as an adult during the day on video, so... same thing with exprcist. the only thing that bothered me about that movie was seeing the needle going in to her skin really early in the movie. News of a remake disappoints me. It's like a snappy MTV-era rewrite of The Bible.

I saw the original as an adult, too. By then I was pretty desensitized to any blood and gore (which was suprisingly all but absent from the film), but I recall being psychologically disoriented for about 30 minutes after the end by all the screaming and zooming cinematography that filled the last 20 minutes or so. Well, the original did very little to me. All I can say though is that I saw a TRAILER to the remake, and the trailer scared the living bejeezus outta me. No small feat, considering I've never found a movie to be frightening, with the exception of the Exorcist. I will be seeing it. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance.
