Chico319 said: "You like me! You really like me!" Thank you to each and every one of you. I am really touched by this. Thanks for the orgnotes and emails as well. I am a lot better. I do have about 4 different medications to take. Including everyone's favourite VALIUM. There aren't words to express how much this thread has lifted my spirits. And Pej; that Kylie picture rose more than my spirits. Thanks! You guys are the best! And a special thanks to for calling me and wishing me well too... at least I think he called Things were a little fuzzy at the time. On a serious note though: I want to personally thank ALI. A stranger who I will forever know as a friend. Though we must be cautious at times and feel alone in this world; we must believe in eachother and yes, in the kindness of strangers. At 2 in the morning , while I was driving myself to the E.R. I had asked him for the directions to the correct medical centre. (there are 3 located in the same area.) He noticed I was having trouble breathing and offerred his assistance. He drove me in my own car too the emergency room. But they said they would accept me as a "humanitarian act", but I'd have to pay out of pocket. So, I held on and he took me to the right E.R. He went in and made them bring me a wheelchair. Helped me check in and made sure I was ok before he left. How I will ever repay him, I'll never know. I'm typing this because of all the hatred and mainly racism I see in this world and on the news. It's ignorant and sad. So; before you judge a person because of race, colour, creed, gender, or sexual orientation; remember..the person you fear the most may be the very one to save your life.! May God Bless him. Wow, what a great story!!! It's wonderful to know that there still are people who care about others, even people that they do not even know. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The social worker in me is kicking in (sorry):
--did you work out a payment plan with the hospital for an affordable monthly payment? Sometimes there's financial aid available, too. Ask the billing department. --please check into health insurance, either through work if you qualify, or through the state. Often, you can get decent insurance through the state that you pay a small monthly amount on, and an office co-pay. Still much better than paying emergency room fees! Glad you're better!

I guess I didn't clarify it above. I have insurance. However we asked a policeman for directions, and he escorted us to the nearest E.R. They told me that they didn't accept my insurance. But would take me in. But we were about a couple blocks away from the other E.R. I was trying to get to. So, back in the car I went, and we got there about 3 mins later. Thank you though. Medical coverage is a joke. I think everyone should be given free medical coverage. But let's not get into that right now. [This message was edited Thu Oct 9 16:35:58 PDT 2003 by Chico319]

Phew, I'm glad you had insurance and that you were able to make it to the "right" hospital. (Everyone should think about that now--do you know which hospitals accept your insurance?!)

I would be interested to know, would they turn you away if you don't have insurance? Refuse to treat you?

Some places will. It has happened to me before. In this case, the first place said they'd accept me as a "humanitarian act". Which is nice I guess. You just don't want the bill later. If it's life threatening , I think they have to. Not realy sure. Probably why they wanted me to come in as well. They weren't sure, nor was I, if this was cardiac or not. I just took my chances. But as AnotherLoverToo stated..make sure you know who does and doesn't accept. There are a lot og loop holes in medical insurance. Make sure you read them carefully and understand them. Our hospital (and I think all of them except private ones are the same) will treat a person, but they get lots of info about you so that they can collect payment. Some patients qualify for state funded healthcare, so hopefully a social worker or someone will get them signed up for it while they're there and it gets taken care of. As I mentioned above, some hospitals get private donations from individuals that help low income families with "hardships" pay off their medical bills. Also, there are some non-emergency medical clinics for non-U.S. citizens without insurance that charge based upon what the family earns. That's helpful. Thankyou Chico and Carrie! I'm glad you are feeling better chico..
The way it works in the U.K is that we have the National Helath Service, which is free healthcare for all. We pay for it through taxes. Healthcare is available to all regardless of income etc. This sounds ideal in theory, but in practice there are a lot of shortcomings and there is vast room for improvement. We do have private healthcare too, if you choose to opt out of the NHS. In recent times the NHS has been heavily criticised and every government makes election promises to improve matters, but it is becoming more and more expensive to run.
