AWESOME episode. Along with last season's cliffhanger, which also took place entirely in Africa, examples of some of the finest network television I've ever seen.

Even the way they did the trailers for the episode, I was sure Luca had gotten his brains blown out. Excellent work.

Yep. I was completely prepared to see his dead body when the "Doctors Without Borders" shirt was uncovered.

I was thinking those 2 episodes can be put together and seen as a feature film. It was that cohesive, and independent of recurring ER plotlines. And what makes it such incredible work is how the Luca storyline is a still a complete arc from the disillusioned man he was throughout all of last season. Beautiful!

So do you think Luca and Abby are gonna get back together now??? Hmm...

Carter returns to Africa to recover Luca's body. The embassy can't help because he's not American. They suggest getting help from Red Cross, and/or paying somone for info. He heads out with a Red Cross volunteer. Thoughout, this is intercut with footage of Luca's last days.

We see the mother of the amputee give Luca a crucifix, saying he is a good Christian like her father. He responds that he is not a good Christian. She tells him only a man of God would be there. Carter encounters a man that had been at the clinic with Luca, which leads them in the right direction. They finally find the place where the bodies are. They go through and see the hand of one white man. It's not Luca. Carter freaks, shows the ID photo to the guard. The guard says, "the priest?"

So we go back to the Luca side of the story. A group of men are all lined up for execution. Luca is the last. He looks to the sky and starts praying. The crucifix falls out of his shirt. The captors ask if he's a priest. He's sick with malaria and can't answer. The woman hears and yells, "Yes! He is!!! You can kill a man of God!!!" And they don't.

Carter is led to a sick Luca. They send him back to Chicago, and Carter decides to stay in Africa. He gives Luca a letter for Abby.

AMEN! He's a fixer and Abby doesn't need to be fixed. Luka accepts her as she is.

It was that cohesive, and independent of recurring ER plotlines.
Do you think they are setting up for some type of spin off?

No, I think they're dedicated to make it stronger to compete against the other dramas out there.

Along with the whole plot and all--though I was thinkin "well of COURSE now you are stayin in the Congo, Carter" (red cross gal anyone?) I really liked that they were bringing some political truths out with the lack of attention to the chaos in that part of the country. But, with next week...are they just gonna have that med student screw up all the time? Give her a break!
