Dr. Ruth Seymour, professor of journalism...

She taught me that we all have biases...the key is to recognize them and know where we are coming from so that we can see where others are coming from.

I think...that Julie asked me this very same question about a year ago for a class assignment...lol smile

I can't remember exactly who I said back then...but if we're allowed to use college professors, then I'd have to say my Philosophy professor during my 2nd year at Ball State...Can't remember the old coot's name to save my life...but he was sarcastic, bitter...confrontational, sometimes even condescending...and just extremely cool as hell, seriously. He was beautiful in the way he would--and could--get you to always see the other side of your beliefs and convictions, no matter how deeply you held them...

And that's probably the lifelong lesson he left with me: that there's always another way of looking at everything in life, not just the way you think is "right"...and that other way is just as valid, just a logical, as your own...even if it contradicts your very own logical, valid perceptions.

...eh, sheddup.

Mr Dave Walters

He taught U.S. history in 10th grade

He was a hippy. He brought his guitar to class. He made us focus on U.S. History from a Native American perspective. He teased the jocks and the cheerleaders incessantly. He favored the 'geeks' who could actually think. He somehow got all of us to mix into a cohesive class that for 60 minutes a day were able to get along and learn from each other.

Also, I skipped class one morning to go downtown to get Prince tix (for the Nude preview show). The next day, he pulls me aside and says "so, did you get good seats?" I apparently looked scared so he said "if you'd skipped for any other reason I'd turn you in, but concert tix are a justified reason to me." He knew me so well...

oops! din't mean to make this so long...

What he taught me: that there were adults who were smart and valued thinking and respect above all other things

...edit....

Miss Brunning my highschool drama teacher and Mr. Leeson my highschool vocal coach. Both of them taught me that it's ok to be a little strange and that I was capable of great things. I still heart them both nod
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.
