Playstation 2

Ok, I got a question for my fellow Orgers. I am thinking of getting Playstation 2. I tried the Tiger Woods golf game at Best Buy the other day and thought it was coolest thing I have seen since The Fonz's leather jacket at The Smithsonian a few years back. The question is, for those who already have it, is it worth the $200? Do you have any complaints? Is a new playstation coming out soon, making this one obsolete? Should I try getting it on ebay? I see a lot of used ones on there, but are they referburbished? Why are they so cheap on there? Finally, what is better, X-Box or PS2?

U see, I am an old school video gamer. Haven't really played too many of 'em since the early 80s (still dust off my Intellivision every once in awhile). I love Golden Tee at the bars and thought the Tiger Woods game is even better. So, please, give a org-brother some advice.

Hey, Pagey. If you like fighting games, you should get SoulCaliber 2 and Tekken 4 and Tekken Tag. But if you like war and adventure games, you should get Socom.
NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Hi, I'm here now! wave

The PS2 has a lot of life left in it. Usually we developers get devkits at least 2 years before a new console launches - no one I know has a PS3 devkit yet. I estimate 2006 before the PS3 is shipping in Europe, and it'll take another year or two before there are quality titles appearing on it. Remember, the launch of the PS2 was dismal.

So, the PS2 is great. Buy one. It is also very cheap. There is a new price drop recently, so it is now £129 in the UK. At that price, it is a steal.

Regarding the Xbox - it is a great machine. Technically far superior to all other consoles, but of course the PS2 has the most games, the most broad selection of titles. If I had to choose one, it'd be the PS2. Of course, the consoles are now getting so cheap that many gamers have both.

Xbox is a fabulous machine too. Halo. Splinter Cell. Panzer Dragoon Orta. Knights of the Old Republic. Project Gotham Racing, Jet Set Radio Future, DOA3, Burnout 2. Etc. Great games.

Nowadays if a new game appears on all 3 consoles, I'll buy the Xbox version. It'll look the best, by a long shot.

Of course, the PS2 has titles like Rez, and Ico, and ZOE2, and MGS2, and GTA Vice City, and Amplitude etc etc. Get a PS2. Enjoy it. Then buy an Xbox. Don't waste your time on the GameCube, unless they drop the price further. Really, the GameCube is only worth owning for the first-party and second-party titles - Zelda, Mario, Pikmin, Metroid Prime.

U rock Ian! That is the info I was looking for. Enough advice so that PS2 will be mine by the weekend.

As for games, I am definitley going to get sports titles more than anything else (Madden 2004 & Tiger Woods--goes w/out saying). Is there a good hockey game out there? I am not very good at the action/war games but might get that Grand Theft Auto...that looks kinda cool.

No worries smile I'm an old-school gamer too.

Well I don't play many sports games myself so I'm not sure I can advise on that, but generally the EA games are very popular. Their NHL game is a big seller with North American games market, as are most of their EA Sports range.

Other great sports games - NBA Street 2, SSX Tricky, Pro Evolution Soccer.

biggrin In fairness, the GameCube controller is the simplest of all of them. Has the least number of buttons, and the most comfortable shape IMO.

GTA Vice City is so addictive you may want to be careful.

I've also read about people opening up X Boxes and putting in a mod chip (bought over the internet) so it places MP3's and a handful of other cool things. Just FYI

Yeah modding an Xbox is dead easy. The PS2 is a pain in the arse... lots of microsoldering. I'm far too clumsy to do a good job of it sad

Most played game at the moment is Knights of the Old Republic on Xbox. It's fab - and I hate Starwars!

I've SO been waiting on this game - bught it, and just dont 'get' it - never played one of these dang-fangled proper roll playing games. Why the hell have I gotta wait 2 be attacked, then parry by the power of three, then...u get the picture. As u can imagine, Im still stuck on that bloody ship! sad

First of all - you don't need to be a seasoned RPG player to play the game. You can make it do all the crappy RPG stuff automatically. The combat takes some getting used to but it works very well when you juggling 3 characters with different abilities etc.

Secondly - stick with it. The first hour seems quite dry, but it pays off. Once you get into it, you'll be hooked. If you are still on the ship, you haven't even begun to see what the game has to offer.

The thing to remember is that it is not an action game. You won't be controlling the combat by pressing keys to slash your sword or to jump etc. The combat all happens automatically.
