Your computer...how important is it to you?

How do you use it?, a tool or a vehicle to pretend you have a life?

Well I spend almost all day every day in front of my computers... I do all my work on them, and of course with email and the Org I spend a lot of free time on them too.

I do think of computers as being very disposable technology though... I build my PCs myself and I tend to upgrade bits frequently...

My poor ol' Vaio laptop is getting a bit old now though actually, I think 2004 could bring a new laptop at some point.

Upgrade junkie myself, but it's mostly used as a tool.

When I was a kid I suppose my computers had more personal attachment for me probably... some of my gear was dug out of skips, and I fixed it up myself etc, and spent all my late nights on em. Now I'm older and can afford whatever computer gear I need, I guess it feels more disposable.

I have a nice wireless network at home, sharing my ADSL etc around the house. My next upgrade is probably a new video card (upgrading from a Geforce 4 Ti4200 to something like a Radeon 9800 Pro). I'm also half-way through building a tiny little mini-ITX system that will sit under my TV. Got a wireless keyboard and mouse, and it is online wirelessly all day. Handy for a quick Google or something, without leaving the sofa biggrin

Actually I just found a great use for my old HDDs - I got an IDE -> USB2.0 adapter. so I can plug my old hard drives in to my PCs using USB and use them as backup devices. Much quicker and cheaper than optical media such as DVDs!

You need a new hard drive? It's so cheap now... it works out like 80p per gig nowadays.

I record all my music on my computer, so it's very important to me. I also use it for entertainment of course.
