Just curious to hear you expand on that, Blackcat.

Were you specifically referring to soul music, or something else? What did you mean, precisely? Are you saying that only Black people have "soul"? I ask because you once accused me of having no soul, so I am interested to find out what I'm missing out on. I didn't realise I had to have dark skin to be soulful. How dark do I have to be? Could I get a suntan?

I've read some great poems over the years that I used to think were truly soulful... but since they were written by white guys, I'm not so sure now confuse I need clarification!

Questions questions smile

Daryl Hall got soul
John Oates got soul
Christopher Walken got soul
Teena Marie GOT SOUL
Christina Aguliara (sp?) got soul
Simply Red got soul

Crackheads ain't got no soul
Racists ain't got no soul
Mass Murderers i.e. Bush, Hitler ain't got no soul

Soul is multifaceted you see. It cannot be pigeon holed into a neat little catagory. Soul is a HEIGHTEN ability to hear and RECEIVE the vibe of the Creator. Soul is a NATURAL ability to groove to the 2 and 4 with ease. And this is why I referenced the term "Blackness" because most Black people are naturally intuned with the "2 and 4, get down"(because of the melinin? because of our long history on earth? who knows why?). For people with soul the 1 and 3 is just kinda outta wack -- off beat, ya know. Soul can be expressed through, music, song, dance (on the 2 & 4 mind you not the 1 and 3),poetry. There's also a certain amount of understanding, compassion and acceptance in soul. Soul is PASSION, I think I also said that in my previous post. Is that good enough for ya, or do you still need further clarification? Oh and for your own health, I wouldn't try the suntan thingey, there are safer ways of obtaining soul if you're really interested. biggrin

I hate to be technical, Blackcat, but I'm gonna have to be in this case. biggrin

The 1 & 3 is where JB put The Funk. And in order to have the Funk, you've got to have the Soul first. From JB on down to PFunk, to Mandrill, and all Funkateers afterwards, being able to be "On the 1" (the accents on the 1 & 3 instead of 2 & 4) is where your Funk mettle was tested.

I have a feeling you're thinking of people who are off beat, and can't carry the groove on time. If that's the case, you're right.

Stevie Ray Vaughan had soul.

Van Morrison has soul.

Steve Cropper & Donald "Duck" Dunn have soul.

Bonnie Raitt has soul.

Carole King has soul.

The Bee Gees have soul.

Pre-80s Chicago had soul.

Jaco Pastorius had soul.

Michael Bolton has no soul.

Pat Boone has no soul.

Tom Jones has no soul.

Vanilla Ice had no soul.

Celine Dion has no soul.

Bruce Willis has no soul.

If we're talking singing then it's basically believing in what you're singing about. It's not exclusively a black thing. Both Bjork and Kate Bush have soulful voices, and as mentioned above so do the Bee Gees. If we're talking about a person's soul then I don't believe such a thing exists. It's just a more fanciful term for character. In my opinion. Before y'all jump down my throat.

(Putting on my smart hat)...

Soul, I think, is simply that force which animates a living thing.

Culturally, soul is the capacity to tap deep emotion and human ethos at will.

How's that?

razz Well, I know all enough about the "2 & 4"... Matter of fact I used to teach bass and guitar, and I once made a fairly decent living as a session jazz guitarist. So I get my "soulfulness" by virtue of being musically talented. I'm also creative and passionate in other ways - in my artistic endeavours, creating videogames, and my writing and drawing. Where did you get yours from, did it come free with your skin colour? Lucky you smile
