Tiger Critically Injures Magician Roy Horn

LAS VEGAS (AP)--A tiger attacked magician Roy Horn of the duo ``Siegfried & Roy'' at his throat during a Friday night performance at The Mirage hotel-casino, authorities said.

Horn was taken to University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Cheryl Persinger.

Firefighters were called to the hotel-casino about 8:45 p.m. and found Horn had been attacked, said Clark County Fire spokesman Bob Leinbach.

The illusionists, who put on one of the most well-known and expensive Las Vegas shows with their signature white tigers and lions, signed a lifetime contract with the Mirage in 2001.

Fishbachler, 64, and 59-year-old Horn have performed together in Las Vegas for more than 30 years. They opened at the Mirage hotel-casino in February 1990

I hate seeing animals made to perform in this way. I hope they don't put the animal down, and give it a decent retirement ... then perhaps they'll do the same for the tiger.

I hope Roy Horn is okay and makes a full recovery. In cases like this they usually put the animal down unfortunately. Why animals are trained to perform for humans in the name of entertainment is ridiculous. It seems the tiger reverted to his natural instincts.

animals in entertainment must be the single most unnecessary form of animal abuse and exploitation around.

i wish no harm to Roy or any other animal abuser (took me a long time meditating to be able to say that), and i sincerely hope that this incident will make him and others like him reconsider the futility of their form of so-called "entertainment".

Essence

The whole thrill crowds get from seeing "dangerous naturally wild beasts" submitting to humour orders is that something could go wrong so don't be surprised when it does.

Well, I guess I didn't realize they tortured their animals. I was under the impression that they truly loved those animals and were quite humane and treated them well.

i'm always sad that it takes an incident like this to get some dialog and discussion going about animals in entertainment.

it seems hard for people to see the inherent abuse that comes with traveling circus shows, hot TV and movie sets, and other unnatural settings for animals. and that's not even considering the actual physical abuse many trainers use.

does there appear to be some karmic justice in this incident? - certainly. but i think it would have been preferable for Roy to see the light before this tragic incident.

i am not aware of any physical abuse allegations against S&R.

but keeping the animals in unnatural settings and forcing them to perform confusing acts in a loud and brightly lit theater is inherently abusive.

Well, I don't wish them harm. Do I think they are wrong in using animals for entertainment? Yes. They continued a very old and ignorant tradition. Circuses have to be looked at again too. Entertainment from the age of ignorance.

Also, this came at just when there are reports about how Zoo's are very bad for large animals.

Umm I've always digged S&R and I saw a telly special on them some years ago and they showed the inside of there home and the tigers seemed to live with them, I mean they had beds and everything, the tigers have anything they wanted and during the whole special they never made the tigers do tricks for the camera, they just walked around and chilled. forgot the name of the special but most def remember it.

I remember seeing that special too. I think it was the e true hollywood story on sigfried and roy. They also went into how roy had a pet tiger when he was like 12 or something.
