Why are people flipped out about breast feeding in public?

I cannot for the life of me understand why people freak out when they see a woman breast feeding in public. It would be one thing if the woman sat there ripping off her top and bra and just hitching the baby to her tit but it's totally harmless when a mother feeds her baby under the blanket. I have caught glimpses of woman's breasts as they whip them out to feed the baby and maybe it's because I'm not sexually stimulated by them that it doesn't phase me.

Are you one of these people who freak out? Why?

Natures way of feeding a baby. Nothing wrong with breastfeeding. That's what they are for!!! I did all 3 of my kids. I did it in public coz I hated having to go and sit on a toilet seat. Quite uncomfortable to be on toilet seat for mom and especially baby.

I am not kidding. I have seen people act as if the woman were having actual sex with the child. People's insecurities about sexuality are comical sometimes. How can anyone look at it as wrong/bad/filthy? And why shouldn't a mother be able to feed the baby whenever it's hungry no matter if she's in a supermarket, restaurant or mall? Why does shame have to be involved? People are crazy nuts

I love you, Organgrinder.

You hit it on the head: Shame. It's ingrained in our culture, especially when it comes to our bodies and any natural processes thereof.

I breastfed my daughters whenever and wherever they were hungry. I got my fair share of stares, but I would just hock a polite loogie in the asshole's direction and they usually got the message.

I agree...it's just because women's breasts have been so over sexualized that most people have forgotten why they're there in the first place...to feed babies.
It's really disgusting what society has turned it into.

Funny how human beings, so allegedly poisoned by technology, are enjoying the longest lifespan in recorded history.

depends on where those tests were done. asbestos is only prevelant in certain area of the country...
only reason i know anything at all about that...is because we just had a shitload of it removed from our land...

from everything ive read...breast feeding is still the best nutritional thing for a newborn baby. and i would only hope that the doctors that live in those areas where the asbestos contamination is...would be smart enough to advise their mother patients not to breast feed due to that contamination...but doctors suck...so they prolly dont. rolleyes but in a perfect world..maybe they would

Fuck, I don't even see why they should have to use the blanket. Let the kid breathe.

I think it is a personal private thing.. Not everyone wants to see a woman whip out their boob and breast feed in public.. Dont' get me wrong.. I have nothing against it if done in the bathroom or someplace private.. I was on the train once and a woman sitting next to me and whipped out her boob to feed her .. GET THIS.. her 4 year old son... that is just gross... there is an age limit on that. your suppose to medically only breast feed for like a few months tops! At the age of 4.. that is just sick! I guess that turned me off to breast feeding in a public place!

Aside from the 4 year old thing disbelief...a woman shouldn't have to flee to a bathroom everytime the baby needs feeding. What if she isn't close to one and what about the bus? It aint like the city buses are equipped like greyhounds..

That is true.. But then it should be done before or after the bus ride.. There is a time and place i feel is appropriate for that.. Just my opinion!

A mom knows when a baby's feeding time is.. especially when they are being breast fed.. They are usually on a schedule.. so if the baby eats around 3pm.. dont get on a bus...

I just can't see how feeding a baby, even when that activity involves breasts (gasp), could ever be inappropriate.

Plus, holy geezus, wouldn't you rather be on a bus with a kid being breastfed than a kid screaming 'cause it's hungry? omg
