Igby Goes Down

anyone see this flick? i watched it last night and took the video out after about an hour and a half. i can't remember seeing anything so hateful as this film in a long time. the performances were strong, actors compelling, but...i got to the pint where the two sons go home to watch their mother die. the older one is feeding her poison (flavored with strawberry i guess) with a spoon. and i thought, "uuugh!"
how vile is that scene? he's spoon-feeding poison to the one who nursed him milk as a babe. couldn't watch it. i understand it's a dark comedy and all, but it was way too painful.
what gives? how come so many critics are going ga-ga over this film. and what's the message? that there is no god, no love, no forgiveness, no reason to live, no reason to love or let yourself be loved? that's about all i got from it...if you've seen this film, please share your thought and impressions here.
thanks.

I saw it in the theater and liked it a great deal. I didn't gush about it the way a lot of critics did, but like you, I thought there were some great performances. But the poisoning was completely an act of love, to spare mother from what ravaged her. And in what had been a completely whacked dysfunctional family, the boys assisting Mother in suicide was showing both love and forgiveness. I didn't at all take it as a message of, "no god, no love, no forgiveness, no reason to live, no reason to love or let yourself be loved", but very much the opposite of that.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

This movie was awful! The acting was superb the writing flawless, but the film showcased something, I don't know what, but something that was so disturbing to me. For hours after the film was over I couldn't stop crying, and for days after I couldn't get it out of my head. I would NOT recommend this film to anyone. If you want to watch a great depressing film watch The Pianist. If you want to watch a great film about teens in crisis watch The Good Girl, but whatever you do don't rent Igby Goes Down. disbelief

yes, but it made you feel SOMETHING. and it made you think about it. that's what great film does, whether your personal reaction is good or bad, beyond the standard "great flick" or "that sucks" reaction that about 75-90% of movies made elicit biggrin

I understand what your saying, but I still would not this recommend film to anyone. There are so many other "great" films out there why waste time on this one. I'm a HUGE film geek, if anyone wants a movie recommedation just orgnote me smile
