On this day in 1982, Scott E. Fahlman included in an e-mail the suggestion of using a colon ( : ) and close bracket ( ) ) to denote a sideways face and the emoticon was born.

Now he is old enough to drink!

weirdest thing about this is that i've always thought that emoticons have always existed in some form or another...of course, not animated and fancy n'chit like now.

gawd...i'm thinkin that i coulda come up with emoticons when i wuz just gettin started on usin pooters when i wuz 5!

i will say happy birthday in emoticon...just for the smiley guy we love...
