Nothing will get lost, but you might wanna do it at night since it's likely to take a while.

an hour or two. If you have other drives, you might want to defragment them too. I would do a ScanDisk and Disc Cleanup first though. Then defragment. Then restart.

girl..when you finish this one...start doing it atleast once every 3-6 months...it's really worth it!! nod

If you've never done it before, its gonna take a long time...but next time..start it before you go to bed...then you won't have to worry about it!! nod

Success, girl!! smile

I never do it. Maybe if you're running Windows98, and that's a big maybe. Modern harddrives have memory caches that mitigate most of the slowdown from fragmentation. It's really an old-fashioned thing to do anymore, IMO.

But I'm sure lots of people disagree.

Probably spyware...it's the #1 cause these days. Go to www.webroot.com and download SpySweeper to clean that crap off. It's using up CPU cycles for the sole purpose of advertising to you in the future.

You need to get yourself something like Norton System Works. It will do all of this for you and even keep an eye on the running of the computer. It fixes any problems you have and is very easy to use.
