he had a bit of bad news: his father passed away earlier today. he was 87 years old...i didn't know 'im too well, cuz all my father's relatives are down in louisiana and i've only been down there once in my entire life (back when i wuz about 7). we all called him grandpa 'shorty', cuz he was kinna short...everybody else on my dad's side is real tall, so that's how that came about...

i don't remember too much about grandpa shorty and i didn't know him very well, so i didn't really know what to think when my dad told me the bad news--it wuz really awkward. the best i coulda done wuz given my dad a hug but i can't do that from here in mpls over the phone (wish i could!). worst thing about all this is that my dad won't be able to go back down to louisiana in order to attend grandpa shorty's funeral, cuz all of his money has gone towards bills n'stuff, so he's totally bummed.

Sorry to hear about your loss. This is interesting for me. My grandfather (mom's side) passed away a couple months ago and I wasn't really affected. I grew up with him but was much closer to my grandmother. I was incredibly close to my grandmother.

One thing that was hard for me to reconcile within myself is that the violence and disfunction that runs rampant within my family began with this one man...my grandfather. He changed his ways but not before abusing the family, beating my grandmother, being a violent drunk for nearly 20 years. My mom was broken up real hard and I can't fault her. As flawed as he was, he was still her father and parents have a funny way of receiving the love of their children, whether deserving or not.

I guess I had to get that off my back.

Violence within the family unit is so deeply destructive in so many unseen ways... ...The positive of him changing his ways is always a welcomed aspect to this type of story/scenario. ...But, yes, you're right...the damage done can still linger...hopefully if he truly did change his ways (it's never too late), true forgiveness was experienced and felt by those he abused...I truly believe nothing puts the mind, the heart, and the soul more at peace that forgiveness.
