Sister of Venus & Serena killed in Cali COMPTON, Calif. - An older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams (news - web sites) was shot to death Sunday, and sheriff's deputies surrounded a house where three suspects were barricaded, authorities said.
Yetunde Price, 31, of Corona, was gunned down shortly after midnight in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton following a confrontation with some residents, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Butler said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. At about 6 a.m., about 40 deputies surrounded a home where three people believed involved in the confrontation were barricaded, Deputy Richard Pena said. No arrests were immediately made. Price was one of five Williams sisters who spent their early years in Compton. The family later moved to Florida. Price was identified as a registered nurse and a business management major in Venus Williams (news - web sites)' personal information listed in the 2003 media guide for the WTA Tour. ....

when will the senseless deaths
of black people in this country end? the residents of compton are so used to gunshots that they are numb drugs and violence are overwhelmingly in black american communities why? is there a diobolical design? rest in peace sister | |

Kellogg, BET.com Staff Writer Posted September 15, 2003 -- America's top tennis family was struck by tragedy Sunday when Yetunde Price, the oldest sister of Serena and Venus Williams, was shot dead while driving through the largely Black Los Angeles suburb of Compton. Hours later, police detained a man they believed was responsible. Price, 31, was Venus and Serena's half-sister, the eldest daughter of Oracene Price and her first husband. Authorities are holding without bail her alleged killer, 24-year-old Aaron Michael Hammer. An associate who was captured with him, Rolland Wormley, 28, is also being held for his potential involvement in the incident on a parole violation charge. Witnesses said that Wormley and Hammer were arguing with local residents before they began shooting. According to reports, as many as 20 shots were fired before Wormley and Hammer sped away from the scene in their white sports utility vehicle. Police are still appealing for more witnesses to come forward. Forty armed police and a SWAT team arrived at the scene of the crime and surrounded a one-story building where Hammer and Wormley were thought to have barricaded themselves in. The SWAT team stormed the building after being unable to establish contact. It was empty. The shooting occurred in the 1100 block of Greenleaf Boulevard in Compton, the rough and rugged neighborhood made famous by such urban gangster flicks as "Boyz N' The Hood" and "Menace II Society." Venus and Serena grew up there along with their three other sisters. Price leaves behind three children. A spokesperson for the Williams family said that they were devastated. ....
