They don't anymore. Don't they alternate women's and men's names? It's not the National Weather Service's fault if women hurricanes tend to be more destructive!

They do alternate. The last tropical system was Henri and the male before than, Fabian, packed quite a punch.

It is rapidly weakening. The eye wall is now exposed because of sheer from westerly winds. It has been downgraded to a category 3 hurricane.

wow - be safe down there!

btw, did you guys get damage during Hurricane Hugo? it reached as far inland as Charlotte and pretty much shut down the city for a couple of weeks, and i remember the coast being hit hard, too.

Yeah we did. At the house at Topsail it ripped up part of the steps going down to the beach, tore up the screened porch and tore off almost all the siding. Unfortunately, not even a mile up the beach, some of the oceanfront homes were completely destroyed so the second row house were quickly upgraded to firstrow. I don't know how mine was spared but it was. As for my house in Monroe, which is just east of Charlotte, the most damage came from fallen trees. One destroyed my garage and did extensive damage to one of my cars. In total I had 22 trees down on my property. Power was out for a while but I was well prepared and had a couple or generators. It's a pain in the ass but you get used to the chances you'll be hit.
