saw the isley brothers last night in winston-salem... front row seats... i went out and bought a new suit for it and everything... gold suit with black pin stripes... black shirt & tie...black hat & shoes... gold belt and gold earrings...

the lady was wearing a black, bootylicious cocktail dress... some gold & black shoes... and rockin' the ice in her ears and around her neck...

and the isleys came out full force... despite his absence on "body kiss," ernie let all us muthafuckas know that he is one of the 10 greatest axe-slingers of all-time and is still more than capable of knockin' ya on your ass... played behind the back, behind the neck, with the teeth, between the legs, you name it...

and ronnie's voice hasn't aged a bit... and they did a damn good job of covering all of the many stages of their career... and even through in snippets of other people's songs whenever the mood hit 'em... at various points in the night, ronnie was singing "love and happiness," "doing it to death aka gonna have a funky good time," "i want to take you higher," "distant lover," among others...

and they did all the big hits... you'd have been hard pressed to find any faults with the show... and they did a good job of balancing the upbeat funky stuff with the slow jams... which was good, because after the past few albums, i had begun to wonder if they had lost the funky side...

and at the end of the concert, after ronnie had left the stage, and it was just ernie and the band, ernie was soloing like crazy... and then he takes his guitar off and starts licking it... then he walks to the edge of the stage, pick in hand...

and he was walkin in my direction... and i saw the heavens open up, and the angels were singing... "ahhh"...

and he handed the pick to me...

and i looked up at the sky, and i said, "Lawd, i knew one day all my hard work was gonna pay off... i knew i was gonna get rewarded one of these days"...

and the Lawd said, "just don't get used to it"...

kick ass show... go see the Isleys on their current tour if you get a chance...

trust me... you won't be disappointed... from "shout" to "what would you do" and all the high points in between... and the band they got playin with them is sho' 'nuff good & plenty funky... especially the drummer... on one of the instrumental numbers that ernie did, he was punishing the skins...

and they played a pretty long set, too... they ended it with a ferocious version of "fight the power," that went off into all kinds of jamming and tangents... ended the show with a bang...
