I may have to have my tonsils out... Has anyone here, or anyone you know, had this procedure done as an adult? One of my docs is referring me to an Ear, Nose and Throat person to recommend this...I've never had surgery before and I'm scurred!

hey apples just think of it this way, when they're out you'll be able to give great Joe Bobs! No more gag reflex baby!

My wife had her tonsils out when she was 25. You will need two weeks before you fully recover. My wife could not talk for a week. There was some bleeding after the surgery but that is normal.
Like others have said you will feel better. Good luck.

Like others have said you will feel better. Good luck. Thanks I've read all sorts of horror stories...like people not being able to drink or eat properly for a month...bleeding starting a week after the surgery...blah blah... I'm glad to hear that your wife is fine...I know it's pretty unusual for an adult to have to get this surgery.

Man, that's the best reason to have your tonsils out whether you need them or not. Thanks Carrie, I will have to get my wife scheduled this week!!! . "

I had my out when I was 21...very sore throat for a day or two, but otherwise not so bad. I don't get sick as often anymore, either...nothing really to worry about.
I'm more scared of the anesthesia than anything else! Fear is the mind-killer.

I'm more scared of the anesthesia than anything else! OMG...you have to tell me everything I've never had surgery before and I'm a big chicken... Well, it was my first and only surgery...they used a sodium pentathol injection to knock me out. I instantly, uncontrollably, fell asleep...and it was pretty much just like sleeping; didn't feel a thing until I woke up. I awoke in the recovery room a really dazed and confused--groggy just like when you wake up in the morning except worse, and it took a really, really, long time for me to wake up and remember where I was. And my throat was really dry and it hurt...they gave me some ice to chew on...it hurt to swallow, but there were painkillers so it wasn't too horrible. I think the doctor cauterized where he cut the tonsils out, so there were no stitches or anything. Just real sore. That's about it really... Fear is the mind-killer.

(thanks for telling me) So, basically it was like someone conked you over the head and cut out a part of your body and then you woke up? (sounds scary! btw, I realize that I'm being a big baby...but, I can't help it. I just got my first tooth filling a year ago and I'm 32) What was it like afterward? Did they send you home right away?

I was pretty scared of the whole surgery thing, too...but you sleep through the hard part, and then you wake up! The good thing was that my ear/nose/throat doctor was really cool and my mother was there, so I was fairly comfortable. Not so bad, really...and yeah, once it was done they let me go straight home. The procedure is very minor compared to some stuff where they have to rip your chest open ya know...they're really just burning off these two bumps in your throat. I don't miss them at all. Fear is the mind-killer.

You're right...I should be ashamed of myself...I know many people who've had open-heart surgery and this is nothing compared to that. What was your recovery like? Could you talk? Could you swallow? Did you get sick from the blood?

What was your recovery like? Could you talk? Could you swallow? Did you get sick from the blood? There was no blood that I knew of...the scars were cauterized. If I swallowed any during the surgery I didn't know it. The pentathol leaves a very funny taste in your mouth, though. That was weird. I couldn't talk right away...it hurt. I could swallow cold things...sorta...with effort. But on the bright side it got better pretty quickly. Of course one of my tonsils was taking up half my throat...it hurt and it had to come out. So in my case I was just glad it was gone. Fear is the mind-killer.

Did they do anything to your uvula?
