Actually, I think I hear what you're getting at.

On my copy of The Hits/B-Sides (purchased on day of release) the word 'gay' is cut short. It's certainly not the full word, like the original version.

For the record, the version of "Controversy" on The Hits/The B-Sides is the version that aired on the radio when I was young. I remember buying the Controversy album back in the mid 80's, and I was shocked that the word was unedited, because I was so accustomed to hearing the edited version of the song!
