Thirteen

OK, I'm urging everyone to go see this movie!!! This indie film is not playing in many theaters, but I'm telling you--YOU MUST SEE IT!! Not since "Welcome to the Dollhouse" has there been a movie that captures the horror of adolesence so VIVIDLY. If you are a parent with prepubescent kids...it is VITAL that you see this!

Trivia: the script was co-written by a 13-year-old girl. It doesn't get more real than this. Jesus, I'm STILL wanting to cry...

Well, you notice in "Kids" how there was almost a total absence of parents? In "Thirteen," the girl's mother (Holly Hunter) is a HUGE force in her life. "Thirteen" is more applicable to my life. Nothing against "Kids" at all; that's a WONDERFUL film. I looove both Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's work (minus 'Gummo.')

this was my major concern...after seeing Bully and Happiness I start to feel that some indie films were crossing the line of art and kiddie porn..

however, a close friend of mine has stated that the marketing of Thirteen does it no justice...There is no gratutious nudity and the story is equally about Holly Hunter's character as it is the teen..

so, with that in mind...im seeing the film next week...i hear its one of Holly's best performances...EVER..

HOLLY HUNTER ROCKS!!!

I thought "Kids" was disgusting. It disturbed me and I was a teen when I saw it

I better go see this movie so that I can understand my 13 y.o. daughter. (The fact that it's being widely advertised and currently playing in every suburban multiplex has nothing to do with voyeurism and exploitation of the teen market, of course.)

LOTS of people disliked "Kids." I liked it because I thought it was EXTREMELY truthful. But one person's truth is not another persons. I dated a girl briefly who thought this movie was the WORST piece of crap she'd ever seen...

But I have not met one person who didn't like "Thirteen."

"Kids" was not my reality. Even though I had a single parent who was working all the time, I wasn't doing the shit those kids were doing

I'm scared to see it because I'm afraid that it mirrors my own life at age 13. I hear everyone's reactions to it, how they say oh it's horrible if that's how some teens really are, but it is true for some. I know because I was pretty bad myself.

The only movie that has captured the agony of adolesence like "Thirteen" was Todd Solondz' "Welcome To the Dollhouse." I was the male equivalent of Dawn Weiner in middle-school and had nearly attempted suicide by 13. Life as an adult is pretty rough, but there's NO FUCKING WAY I'd ever go back to those days...

Oh, the soundtrack to "Thirteen" rules too! It's alternative music that's actually alternative!
