Why did Yoda make Luke go into that dark cave? .
Best answer wins a Skele-Jedi mug. By the way, this is not a trivia question, but a philosophical one. I want your interpretation. philosophical edit [This message was edited Mon Sep 8 8:44:52 PDT 2003 by teller] Fear is the mind-killer.

Hate leads to suffering." 1.luke has fears concerning fathers death 2.if luke finds out about father in the wrong manner, leads to anger 3.this anger will build into hate 4.bringing him to the dark side, suffering

I always guessed it was a spiritual experience that helped Luke to realise that the dark side of Force is present inside everyone, and not to give in to it. When Luke struck down Darth Vader in the cave, he succumbed to his anger and desire for vengeance and so when he looked at the helmet he saw himself - therefore he had seen that giving in to feelings of anger and the dark side of the Force made him the same as Vader. Or something.
Or perhaps the Darth Vader that Luke struck down in the vision was merely a symbolic representation of the dark side of the Force inside of Luke. Basically a case of Luke "facing his demons". Alternatively, it could be prophetic of Luke's relationship with his father Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker.

deep answer:
yoda sends him in so that luke will realize that the dark side and the light side are always at war with one another within ones' self. when luke destroys vader, he has given in to the dark side and allowed his anger and rage to clout his vision. when he sees himself in vader's helmet, he realizes that his rage is turning him into vader, and that he must learn to take the path of light. Because Yoda knows that Luke has the hots for his sister, Leia. He must not let Luke know that HE knows of this forbidden fruit. Cave represents the dark depths of Leia's vagina. Luke must learn to be scared of the dark place and fear its mystical powers. The vaginal force is very strong but Luke must be trained that this is indeed part of the dark side, and a place he should never discover. ---------------------------------

Luke cannot truly confront the Dark Side unless he becomes acquainted with it in a very real way: both in the cave and in himself. He confronts only what he takes with him. He takes a weapon. He confronts Vader, the Weapon of the Dark Side, and in so doing, confronts the potential for evil within himself.
And Yoda was tired of looking at him. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Look, guys. Your philosophical musings about Luke's experience in the tree/cave are all very interesting, but that wasn't the question.
teller said: Why did Yoda make Luke go into that dark cave?
Because at the end of one of their training sessions in the ways of the Force, Luke sensed darkness/evil emanating from that place. Yoda said Luke had to go there to confront his darkest fears. Possibly, this was part of the training program and with Luke having brought up the subject on his own, Yoda figured they might as well just get that lesson over with and sent him along. Apparently, Luke's darkest fear was facing Lord Darth Vader. The part of him seeing his own face underneath the mask can be interpretated in many ways - his darkest fear was really to succomb to the Dark Side and himself become the one thing that he feared the most. It might have been a hint from the Force of Darth Vader actually being Luke's father - the danger of "like father, like son." This was also hinted at in Return of the Jedi, were Luke gives in to his anger and cuts Vader's arm off and realizes that they are alike. In fact, this whole cave scene in Empire might be a premonition of what actually happened in Jedi - Luke seeing himself in Darth Vader as well as realizing the danger of becoming just like Vader. And that realization is his saving grace in Jedi. Well... whaddaya think? It makes sense and adds purpose to the scene in the overall scheme. Luke was just getting on his last nerve and Yoda had to go take a poop in the swamp.
That might be the bigger question. Why do we never see any character taking care or their business? In a galaxy far far away, do they go in caves to poop? ---------------------------------
