A lier is a thief.
In the telling of the lie they steal from you
a belief. (ie. you believe whut you're hearing from them)
If the lie is discovered you find that they have also stole
your trust.

The lier (liar) has a need to take from you you being equal
to them, they steal your level playing field making themselves, for a time, superior to you as far as information goes. For them it may seem a feather in their cap. The prollum is that these liars forget that to enforce the lie they must continue to lie, because in one truth
they are at risk of exposing all truth of lies told.

Look at the various slipups here on the org. They seem so knowledgable and true then suddenly you're wondering "where did that come from?" Upon excusing it as a minor slipup
you find that again you askin "DAMN, where does this shit keep commin from?" 'Til finaly all you can do is understand that this is that true person and all else was garbage and lies.

As a child I was both a liar and a thief and continued to be so 'til a lot later in life (a lot later) but it has helped me to understand whut it is they do whereas back then
i had no clue whut it was I was actualy doing to people.

Well said man...

I find it important to take a look in the mirror when a thread like this comes up, because it's so easy to come on here and act like yo shit don't stank wink So...

Something else which has occurred to me while reading this thread is that I think it's especially important to evaluate only that which has affected me personally, as far as lies go. I have made the mistake in real life, as well as on the internet, of listening to gossip and forming opinions of people based upon that gossip, rather than direct interaction with that person. This in turn has led me to say or do unkind things, believing I was doing what was "right" and defending someone I cared about/being loyal.

In other words--I am trying to learn that (though I am a social worker and advocate) I am not here to "help" or "save" other people, or to call out their "enemies" on the supposed lies someone has told me about. I need to make up my own mind based upon direct contact with others, not based upon what someone has told me.

Fair answer. So, lets say you lie. Are you then comfortable with being called out on it? Even though you have put much energy into this behavior? Would it bother you that this will change how others feel about you?

not really. i don't lie to people if i care what they think about me.

when i was with my ex-husband...he used to tell me about a car that he owned...black camero...with a red hood...he had sooo many stories of him and this car...but he was in an accident...and the money that was owed to him after the wreck was put into a trust fund...at which he could get too in about a year.

the accident was really bad...a drunk driver...the guy also physically assaulted him that night..so he was in jail for a while...

anyway...after i had brianna...his mother came to stay with us for a while...we were talking...and you know what ???

there was no accident, no drunk driver...because...there was no car !!! i couldnt believe it...i mean...what a stupid thing to freakin lie about !!!

but, i think he told that story to so many people...that he started to believe it himself...i still to this day dont know why he would do that...he had to know that i would find out someday...what a sick, twisted soul he really is...

im just glad its over nod

The major reason for my finding the way to stop lying was finding out that I no longer cared about whut people thought.
I lost the fear of being rejected in any form. There is no-one important enough for me to lie to anymore. Before I would lie to you, I would just say "FUCK YOU" and be done with it.

Well said, setting yourself free seems to make the reason
to lie disappear. Once you are comfortable witt who you are
you find no reason to "pump up" your image. We all got flaws. Gil-Scott said it best ain't no such thing as a superman.

This brings up a good point--that often lying isn't for attention and doesn't have some evil purpose. It's a form of self-protection and wanting people to see them in their best light. Like the children's fairytale, "The Emporer's New Clothes", hoping everyone will go along with the lie and pretend to see what you tell them they're seeing, rather than what their own two eyes tell them.

True this.

And everybody is entitled to a mistake. It is easy to judge another for what they do, and in the same breath do the same thing they are quilty of.

I can only speak for myself...but the lies told and secrets kept from most on here I did so for safety(my "online stalker" story was horrific)...as well as for "escape"...and indeed even out of "fear"...none of which excuse the actions.

i think sometimes lies happen because people actually believe what they want to believe or rely on what they THINK they know..

of course some people lie on purpose but not all
