love Watchmen. i'm about to start re-reading it again.
though i'm not sure it would make for a good movie. or at least, i'm not sure how they would do it. so much of it is built upon flashbacks, plus that tangent with the pirate story... don't know how they'd weave it all together to make it stand up as a movie without being too confusing (or too long).

Terry Gilliam's Unresolved Projects
In interviews while Munchausen was being released, Gilliam was seen to wear the famous blood-stained smiley badge familiar to fans of graphic novel Watchmen. Says Gilliam, "What happened was, Watchmen came along. Joel Silver came along and convinced me there was this 'go' project, and they had a huge budget and all that stuff, and I like Watchmen a lot; I think it's really good. And so I got caught up in that thing, and I was actually terrified of it because it was going to be one more monstrous project. But we went along with it; it was weird, because I was sort of propelled forward because it was subject matter I liked a lot, and I knew I could do it, I recognised that I was about the only person who could do it well, and then I didn't get the money. So I was 'saved' from that one." Gilliam worked with Charles McKeown on this movie, adapting the script created by Sam Hamm, but producer Joel Silver failed to raise the finance to make this picture. "However, I was contacted by the new owner of the rights in January [1996], wanting to know if I was still interested. I think it's going to be impossible to make as a film, unless you make it three and a half hours long, which most people aren't going to want", said Gilliam. Maybe that with LOTR & Matrix success now producers will considered this project again

maybe it will be made, but it's not actually the length of it that's going to be the problem. it's going to be plot mechanics. the flashbacks and the flashbacks-within-flashbacks, and the tangential stuff that really has no bearing on what's going on, but what makes it an interesting story, instead of just a straightforward look at washed-up superheroes. so many plot threads to follow, that all lead to the same point is going to be a very difficult movie to make.

"WATCHMEN" - Coming Soon...? Screenwriter David Hayter ("X-Men") spoke to 'USC Trojanvision' (a radio station for the University of Southern California) and indicated the status of the fabled "Watchmen" movie adaptation. He said: "When I signed on to do my draft of 'The Hulk', and then Ang Lee came on to direct, I was a really hot commodity, and my agents asked me 'What's your dream? What do you want to do?' And I said that my dream is that I want to do 'Watchmen'. So I chased it down, and they said it's been floating around for 17 years, the rights are all tied up =96 it's a big mess, you'll never get it." "So a year later I sat down with the producer who owned the rights to the film, I told him what I wanted to do with it, and he checked it out and all the rights were cleared up. So the big lesson there for me was just if you want something, just ask... [Watchmen] is very literate and very cool, but I don't think we could have made it before 'X-Men' was so successful. 'X-Men' opened up some more untraditional comic books getting movies." Yes! Looks like Alan Moore's masterpiece is coming... slowly...
