Sometimes when people are afraid of the unfamiliar and unknown, they attempt to plan it out meticulously in their mind, thinking that they are preparing for every possibility and thus protecting themselves. But ultimately, no one can ever prepare themselves for the fullness of the experience--whatever it may be.

Accepting an open relationship for the sole reason of trying to avoid the pain of betrayal is probably not realistic. If you don't really feel "open" in the open relationship, you will not avoid the emotional backlash.

Hell, when I was younger I thought like that, (kinda) through listening to Prince music etc etc, and OMG, I got such a big shock when I started relationships...luckily we are all different, and as you said before we all have choices..

I've just met 3 different girls that are into me, and they're lots of fun too... now I have to make a decision (or be an asshole)... but not if we can all have open relationships! Why cant we all just get along?

I have a story about this. I once had a one-night-stand with a woman I met at this social function (hey, it was the ONLY one-night-stand I've ever had!!). Anyway, we end up dancing, kissing, then...going back to my place. It seems to me that an open relationship is like Communism and living exclusively on sex and chocolate--an idea that sounds good on paper, but doesn't work if you apply it.

They tried the open-relationship bit in the '70s and it didn't change society one bit. It didn't work then and it doesn't work now. On a sexual level, maybe it would be great to fuck freely without consequence or hurt feelings. But this is THE REAL WORLD.

You'll find me out with ONE--count her--ONE woman...

What I think people are assuming here is that any "additional" relationships are going to be of the just-fucking-around variety. That's not a safe assumption.

I think there is also an assumption that if one has multiple partners, the first one wasn't meeting their needs, or if the entirety of ones needs are not being met by their partner, that something is wrong in the relationship. Why is it that a person can't have one perfectly lovely relationship, but still want to have love and have intimacy with some of the other wonderful folks on the planet? What does one have to do with the other? And why should we ask one other person to meet all of our needs? Who made up that rule?

But really. Don't you just love that we can all choose for ourselves to have only exactly the number of relationships that we wan't, and let other people do the same? Isn't life swell?
