In the end....

Is the struggle for your self-development worth it? Are the results worth the pain, agony and fear?

Is it worth to keep trying to be a better person?

No, it is not worth it... you should degenerate into a feral state and kill for food.

Just be yourself, don't worry too much about what people think. Be kind and don't purposefully harm others, try hard to achieve your goals and hopefully then die happy.

Unfortunately yes. It is a constant struggle to "better" yourself no doubt. But that's a life worth living in my opinion. One thing I've learned is that if there is ONE thing worth fighting for it's yourself. No one else can or should do it for you not even those who love you. Any sorrow or joy that you experience are yours and yours alone. For better or worse, I'm glad that my experiences and the lessons I've learned from them are something that no one can take away.

You should read the following two books:

Justine, or the Misfortunes of Virtue
Juliette

Both are by the Marquis De Sade and they address your very question.

Should be very usefull for sadomasochists, and that's why I intend to find them!

Well, it kinda depends... If you feel that you are alright as you are, then what's to strive for?
If you think there are ways you can be better, then strive to achieve them.
One of the Prince-lines I've taken to heart is "You've got 2 strive 2 be the best that U can be" - even though it is my impression that he himself isn't exactly living according to his own advice...

Yes. There's no pain, agony or fear about it.
Fear is the mind-killer.
